my main bearing is spinning when i try to undo the nut.
I need a press to squeeze the case and hold it while I get the main pinion bearing nut off.

From what I can tell, it looks fine. Do all of the teeth on the pinion look as good as the "top" ones? There is something on the bottom ones or maybe a reflection or whatever??

It looks like black oil stains or just oil I think.

I don't have a press at home and my pinion nut is just spinning the bearing.
Can anyone tell me how to stop the bearing from spinning so I can get this big nut off?

That is tricky. Since it is spinning, then the case is shot or at least needs re-sleeved. Therefore, I use a die grinder (with a GOOD quality carbide burr bit- flat on the end works best) and grind through the nut (do it where the lock groove in the bearing is). After you grind through most of it, then you can use a chisel and crack the nut. You will most likely destroy the bearing threads, but it doesn't matter as you should probably replace it anyway..

You can just split the nut with a chisel it makes less mess than a die grinder

I finally got my pinion nut off. I put the trans in a press and put some pressure on the shaft.

The reverse gear shift fork was missing . It goes on the pin in the back of the photo here.

The wear on the shift housing won't hurt anything. If the bearing fits
loose in the bore then this can be sleeved as well.
You will want to install a thrust
plate under the nosecone as this
will prevent the mainshaft from moving.

This is good news. Where is a thrust plate available for a VW 091 gearbox?
