pancake to upright
Never did it and was wondering if it is very involved? I might have found a good deal and don't know if I want to give it a shot. Thx, Ron

Type 3 engine? Pretty easy get a adaptor for a type 1 dipstick for the oil fill tube and the tin, tap the boss for a oil sender and that 's about it except for all the tin and acc.

and the Type III case has no provision for an oil pressure sender since they have theirs in the oil cooler. You can either drill & tap the case for it (best done with a starter jig or transaxle bolted to the engine so that you can crank it over so oil will flow out the hole and flush the chips away, but it's also possible to push oil or air into the engine via the oil cooler passage while you work) or you can modify the Type I fanshroud slightly to allow using the Type III cooler; firewall clearance is limited, you may want to use a 90° fitting and some other brass to move the switch off to the side (I've also seen the firewall hole-sawed and a "bubbled" cover fitted - that simplifies future access to the switch). If it's a pre`70 small-passage case you'll need conversion oil seals to install the DP cooler adapter (you'll need two pair of conversion seals if you use the early Type III cooler) http://www.oldvolkshome.com/oilcool.htm
Other than those items the rest of the conversion is fairly simple, just replacing some studs with ones of the correct length (fuelpump for example) - the Type III oil cooler hardware is 6mm, so you need to drill the ears on the case to 8mm and drill/tap the case for an 8mm stud. If it has true Type III heads they'll have some extra finnage near the sparkplugs that interferes with Type I overcylinder tin - it can be cut away with a sharp chisel. The distributor drive gear will probably need to be removed and rotated to the correct position for the Type I distributor...
