091 thrust surface scuffing on gears

Post by fastback »

had trouble with hard shifting in my 091 transaxle for a while now.
have started doing a check up , and i had a fair bit scuffing on the thrust between 2. and 3. gear (mainshaft).
tried to fix the surfaces with sanding on a flat surface , "de burred" the teeths and polishing surfaces , but i'm not shure what causes the friction between these gears?
could it caused by hard "engine breaking" in 2.gear ,pushing the mainshaft into the 3 gear.??
or is it hard acceleration on 2.gear that causes this?
casue when engaged i 3. gear the 2.gear on the mainshaft and the 3. gear have the same speed.

It has 3 oil grooves on the 3. gear

Make sure you have enough end clearance, when the hub is down against the circlip.
Same with 4th.
You want to make sure,
that if the hub can move against ANY gears at ANY time,
that they still have clearance.

Also make sure that your face grooves don't have sharp edges that can scrape away the oil layer.

I assume your nose cone is not worn, allowing the whole main shaft to move forward?

thx for the input dangerous
the nose cone looks very good.
no noticable edges on the surface for the bearing.(alu nose cone and alu intermediate housing)
I did not assemble the tranny so i'm not shure about the tolerances, but will pay attention to it.

still trying to see how the forces work on accel and decel, and i asume that a "slow turning" gear due to scuffing/tight tolerances would cause problems with shifting.
all weedle gears

When accelerating, all thrust forces go toward 4th gear. It is most likely a clearance issue. What kind of oil are you using? After pressing the hub on, I install snapring, then press the hub against the snapring. Hubs can move, though depending on how tight the press is. Weddle makes their gears as wide as possible and I have had these issues myself on rare occasions. You can polish a few thousands off of the face if you want. I do not believe it would hurt anything. Also, check the thickness against stock gears..
