The most desirable distributor to run with a 34PICT-3/4 carb is the one used on all non-California 4-speed Type I engines (Bug/`Ghia/Thing) in 1974. They used a similar one on the Mexi-Bugs (until they went to electronic ignition) that took a different condenser but was otherwise the same. These are commonly referred to these days as "SVDA" (single-vacuum, dual advance). The original VW P/N was 043 905 205; Bosch # 0 231 170 034. You may find rebuilt units on the market bearing a different part number but that's only because the housing is interchangeable with many other applications - so long as it's represented to be a replacement unit for a `74 Federal 4-speed it should have the correct vacuum and centrifugal mechanisms. Set the initial (hose-off) or static timing at 7.5° BTDC.
Second-best choice is a DVDA, found on `71-`73 Type I engines (the DVDA used on `75-up L-Jetronic FI motors is pretty close, too). These ones all had a vacuum-retard mechanism that pulled the timing back under high manifold vacuum to reduce HC emissions at idle - they were set to 5° ATDC at idle with hoses on. As it happens, a DVDA with the retard side disconnected has an advance curve quite similar to the SVDA if you set the initial timing to 7.5°BTDC - it looks klunkier but functionally it's almost the same. Typically the first thing to go wrong with a DVDA is the retard diaphragm starts leaking - replacements cost ~$80 and up IF you can find one - but if the advance diaphragm is intact and the centrifugal mechanism still works the distributor is very usable...something to keep an eye out for at swap meets, it might only cost $5-10.
