Dizzy pinion drive doesn't fit in new Brazilian case.

Post by D7 »

Started on my new Brazilian case and found that my new distributor drive pinion would not fit in the hole. Tried and old pinion from a 1600 and it fit perfectly.Thankfully I had not sealed the case before checking it out.Just wondering any thing I should be aware of re widening the hole.

Anything else I should look out for on these Aircooled Brazilian cases, It looks well made?

If I understand you properly, the NEW drive pinion does NOT fit, but an old German one does.

If that is the case, there is probably nothing wrong with the crankcase.
install the OG pinion and press on, the new drive is made wrong.
Return it or recycle.

But first:
Have you checked that it's not just a burr on the new pinion?
Is the size actually different?
(you are measuring everything, right?
Just assembling parts you "know" are good "because they are new" seldom ends well these days)

Check that the pressure relief piston moves well and fully seats at the top....
And that all the oil passages are actually all drilled out.
Trust nothing.
Even the OG parts these days are leftovers from decades of cherry picking.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Correct Piledriver "the NEW drive pinion does NOT fit, but an old German one does."

I could not detect an actual burr. The new pinion was definitely a smidgen bigger and the top would not go in the hole at all. I spent about 10 minutes with some emery cloth rubbing the top of the pinion, about the depth of the slot, and a minute or so a little further down the shaft. I also gave the case hole a bit of a polish and now the pinion slides in just as the original does and the actual dizzy slides in OK now too.

It makes me wonder though just how accurate those other tolerances are down further on the shaft, especially where it meshes with the gear, as I have no way of measuring them. This pinion came in an unmarked plastic bag. I was thinking of using the old pinion again but I had dropped it on the floor, albeit wood floor 3 times in the past so who knows what damage may have been done internally, and I didn't want to take any chances with my new case. So what happens?... I get a dodgy(?) pinion.

Good advice on checking out those pressure relief openings and the oil passages, and you are right-check everything before beginning assembly with new case or parts, because chances are these days something ain't gonna fit.

Cool, glad it was simple to fix.

Google for Bob Hoovers HVX oiling mods and do them while you can.

Just a tip on pre assembling the case. Install the distributor hold down clamp, drive gear, shims, spring, and distributor. Set it where you want #1 to fire then lay the crank. This will save time and will not be as frustrating as trying to install the drive gear after the case is buttoned up.

Exactly ainokea as I intended. After my last rebuild where no matter how I tried to set the dizzy correctly -(parallel with the case) I just could not get it right and I had to haul the damn thing out at least four times by using a telescoping magnet and turning the case upside down. I ended up dropping it on the floor a couple of times which is why I bought a new one just in case.
