Purpose of inner alternator/generator backing plate.

Post by theKbStockpiler »

The outer plates purpose is clear but why the inner plate, just to stiffen things up? How you get it inside the shroud?
Thanks in advance!

I hope it is to cool the alternator

I assume this was vw's attempt to cool the alternator/generator. It's really a stupid design so unless you worked for vw you are not going to be able to guess too well why it is the way it is. Shim the fan????

Hi TheKbStockpiler,

The inner Gen/Alt backing plate is a reinforcement, and if you notice, incorporates a drain for water that may enter the Gen/Alt itself.

The drain slot should always be installed facing downwards.

Okay that does make sense. How is the alternator cooled?

I was under the impression that the scoop/slot was designed to take pressurized fan shroud air and force air through the alternator. I have heard from a lot of old school vw guys that if the generator is overheating it is usually the scoop installed wrong.

The "scoop" as you've called it is actually an eductor port, designed to pull air through the generator/alternator from the pulley end. To work effectively it should be at 6:00.

So the "scoop" must be positioned properly to cool the generator. That is at least true, they just described it backwards.

What about the mexican beetle pulley with fan blades on it? Doesn't it cancel out the flow because it pulls air to the rear of the car, where the shroud wants to pull air towards the main cooling fan in the shroud?

The Brazilian Model must be higher Amp.

Post by theKbStockpiler »

I have had foreign cars when they where still doing things their own way and not adapting a method from another manufacturer unless they really had to. I think the Brazilian company doesn't 't think it would be worth it to be cheap about it. Maybe the Brazilian fan is a puller style? If VW didn't spot weld some of their body panels on , I would assume the car was designed around not having a spot welder and that would explain everything.

I just bought a alternator stand from ebay so I can add that to my signature ,but still no car.
