Wbx studs

Post by ED2.4 »

Hi there,
i'm building an oxyboxer right now , i'd previously plan to put some Bugpack 12pts 8mm chromoly heads studs with savers in the DJ case ,
But when i removed and cleaned the old studs they looks in a very good shape ,no rust no cracks, and they're 12.9 grade high quality strength,
and they fit perfectly on my JPM 4" heads (length)
so the question is : what's the better choice ?
i'd heard that the vanagon/wbx mechanics always change the head studs when they open the bloc, where's the truth ?

so ,oxyboxer guys could you give me some advises/inputs on please,

many thanks in advance

on all my WBX builds i have not ever changed one stud.
the also hold up good in high boost turbo application.

but u need some spare ones dont u? to get the correct length on the shorter ones?

Hi Fastback ,
thanks for your reply ,
last time i saw the topic of your bus engine ,impressive power number! so i trust you ,wbx studs seems to be enough for my N/A engine ! :D
about the shorter studs ,yes they are a little short but i have four 2.1L blocks here for spare parts,
i ordered some new ones from a shop , they are nice and shinny but i'm sure of the strength is like originals ,so i prefer putting the old ones

thx again

Same here, I never pull them. To do an oxyboxer they usually all get pulled in order to mill off the water jackets, but Building a wbx there's no reason to R&R studs unless they are corroded. In a decently-maintained cooling sys the studs are normally pristine and you'll be hard-pressed to find any that are stronger.

Okay, thanks for advise ,
i definitely keep them !
and about the nuts? i've ARP chromoly 12pts nuts in 10x150 for the heads ,what about the compatibility chromoly/OG studs ?
do you think it's a good idea? personally i don't see a problem ,but i prefer to have some opinions

thanks

IIRC the design of the metric standard for the nuts/bolts , is so that the threads is not the "weakest part" so u can get away with "std nuts" on a 12.9 grade bolt

Okay thanks ,i 've some 12.9 grade bolts too ,the problem is for the 4 studs located in the rocker box ,on the JPM heads ,there's no room for big 12.9 nuts& washers,
it's why i found ARP nuts looks pretty fine to go there
thanks
