Im having major headaches , my starter keeps getting stuck on the pressureplatebolts /ridges ... my t3 auto syncrostarter just gave up the ghost emidiantly even the correct spacer in place., the type4 starter however pulls the engine aroud easily until one of the ridges on the pressuseplate apears. BANG and it all grinds to a halt locking the engine solid.
I have an aftermarket much stouter pressureplate, is this maybe the culprit ? ooh how i wish there was a easy fix for this WITHOUT removing the engine all again.
H E L P ?

Dann

I am not familiar with the true 411 starter, but if its anything like a late Bus/Vanagon or 914 starter, it needs a ~12-13mm spacer to work in a T1 transmission.
(BTDT, have the scars)
Wait---Didn't we just go over this?
9mm probably won't cut it.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

the type 4 late bay starter looks exactly like my beetle starter.
my problem is that the ring behind the moving startergear hits the pressureplate even if i space it out 6 or 9 mm .... if using any more spacing the shaft of the starter will not even seat in the hole of the transmission ...

the late bay//914 starters I have are all self supporting/automatic style with a long reach.
I suspect the starter you have is not what you think it is.

There was a manual starter but it was used with the same 228MM FW AFAIK.
Perhaps the dead late bay had a trans swap with an 002 at some point in history?
(It will work with a 210/215mm FW, the 228 just hits stuff)
914/late bay & Vanagon Auto starter is SR-17X, will need that spacer to work on a T1 trans.
Other option is go back to a T3 auto starter.
Some of the 914/vanagon starters are higher output (.9KW)

I have not used it/done it myself, all the usual disclaimers apply.
