Hello all, im hoping someone on here could hopefully put some new pointers my way to hopefully get this motor running right???
I'll start with what iv done to the engine so maybe it will ring a bell for someone that has already done this conversion....
Iv taken carbed 1.9 dg panel van with a blow up motor an removed this to replace it with a 2.1 dj motor from another van which was fuel injection....
Iv taken off the fuel injection an replaced with carbs an iv also modified the back end of the exhaust systems so now it sports a large flange beetle turbo muffler....
So firstly i tryed a set of 48 dellortos on it along with a full clean up an service, everythings been replaced from coil through to plugs, standard electronic ingition is still there, but seems to be working good an has a strong spark...
Iv also fitted an aftermarket electronic fuel pump which stated it was for 2000cc an above.....it seems to have good fuel pressure an is coming threw ok....
Right so with the 48's on it sounded bloody great an ticked over nicely an seem to rev up good.....but from about quarter throttle upwards it would start to break up when holding it under load.....popping and banging threw the carbs an the exhaust pressure was pulsating as well which kinda made it seem like it has got a misfire??? Tryed changing plugs, cap, coil etc an its still the same, opon taking it out on the roads, it was fine on tick over an slow driving but as soon as you tryed to boot it, it would bog down an fart an sound like someone just put their hand over the carbs an starved it..but as soon as you let you foot off again it would drop back it happily idling away..... Seeming like fuel starvation again..
So this lead me too(after phoning our local carb tuner for advice) taking these carbs off due to possibly beening too big for the motor??? an fitting a set of dellorto twin 40's on it yesterday instead..... fired it up an its doing exactly the same as the above???? So this kinda rules out the carbs...dosn't it?? Iv tryed running it with the vacum advance connected an blanked off to the dizzy, iv also disconnected the servo for the brakes(i had to weld a log on the side of one like on the standard single manifold for the brakes) an blanked it up in case it was running uneven but still no joy...???!!!!
Im starting run out of ideas, now im looking at either dodgy ignition moduale(bit in the left corner of engine bay?) Or perhaps a dodgy dizzy, but on inspection there dosn't seem to be any exsessive play or out?? An a few weeks ago this motor was running sweet in the panelvan i took it out of an was using for a while so im assuming its something to do with the very mild an straight forward mods???...
Please any sudjestions?? or has anyone done this same upgrade an had this or simular problem...
Thank you for your time,
regards mat

Firstly the 48 carbs are fine depending on the choke sizes, have you balanced them side to side with the linkage disconnected? fuel pressure needs to be 2.5 psi, 3 at the very most, popping and banging/ dying, is usually the fuelling going lean for whatever reason, also be sure the fuel pump is for carbs, injection fuel pumps wont work, too high on pressure and residual pressure built in to them will flood over while standing.

Hi, i thought the 48's would be ok but was tryin all my resources, yeah did have a guy balance em with the linkage off, the fuel pump is for carbs(but will double check) I don't have a fuel regulator on so don't know the psi so that would be something to check even tho there seems to be plenty coming threw, but perhaps not on demand?? Or perhaps to much with what your saying??? Iv looked down the carbs when she's running and it dosn't seem to be over filling the chambers with fuel??? Thanks for your reply much appricated!
will look at putting a reg in to check these pressures out....

o.k. now you need to post up your choke sizes together with the jetting that's in the carbs. it should idle with the screws out no more than about 1.5 or less, try 65 idle jets, these are important because they also control the progression stage, which seems to be around the point yours is playing up. chokes cant be too big with the stock cam in there, a guess would be 32s for the stock cam, 34 would be about max i would think, possibly the carbs will turn out to be over choked, you can see the size markings on the top edge of the chokes by looking down the barrels with a torch.

Yeah its a stock cam at the mo an ill check the jets an chokes, all i know is the ones which are now on there are dellorto twin choke 40,s.....ill look to see what the number is on the choke/butterflies....cheers
