Please help! Main bearing question...

Post by turbo dub »

Hello! Its been a while! I have a new AS41 case and a new c/w crank whick measure 2.1645 on 3 of the mains. Rods are perfect! The case is the problem here I think (matbe its me!!). The case bores measure 2.560 (.002 over spec!). I am not getting any crush on the main bearing. The oil clearance is measuring .0035 to .005 (over 3 sets of bearings)! Of the closeset set 2 and 4 measure .0035-.004 out of the case and when torqued to 18 and 20 lb ft. I thought that may be a little loose for a street 1776 that will NOT be pushed hard at all. I have always looked for .0025 clearance on the mains on the other engines Ive done but this one is being a PITA. Am I going to have to line bore this brand new case to get what im looking for? Next question is If so is there any reputable machine shops that still have the equipment and knowledge of the a/c on the east coast (preferably in the northeast)?

If it were me, I would assemble the engine with plastigage and torque to 25-28 ft lb on the six main case nuts. I'm using an Auto Linea AS41 Brazilian case and it checked out fine with Kolbenschmidt bearings, but you may have a later casting.
