Problem with oxyboxer oil pressure/temp.

Post by justin pane »

I've built a 2.1 oxyboxer with a72 plate oil cooler and fan. On start up oil pressure is 4 bar (about 60psi) and it takes about 30 miles at 60 mph to drop down to about 3 bar temp is around 75/85c
would a thermostat (what type?) help with warm up? but if fitted would it restrict oil flow to the bearing.
thanks for any advice jp
forgot to say it in a type 2 camper van

On start up 900rpm then 2500/3000rpm. pressure starts to drop after about 30 miles.
I'm concerned that the high (4bar) start up pressure will do some damage

no it won't damage anything, but use a good mulitgrade oil to ensure lube at cold engine
10W40 or 5w40 'ish oil

The pressures you report are not overly worrisome, but indicate you may be running a large oil pump. I'd be more concerned about oil starvation when turning or going up hill if you're running a large oil pump with the stock oil pickup. Has your oil pressure gone from a steady 45 psi down to 20 psi when turning or going up hill?

I'm running a standard pump, and I've not lost any pressure on hill or turning, what concerns me is the long warm up time and the 4bar oil pressure while the engine is warming up and was hoping to decrease the warm up time.

Exactly why VW used the heat exchanger under the oil filter. mine pulls 80 psi cold with a 32mm d/s pump and runs at 60psi hot. you could try a softer relief spring in the case if it really worries you, personally, i would leave it as it is.

Thanks to you all, you've put my mind at rest, I'll run it as it is, perhaps try a 10/40 oil at the next change
