In the service manual the magic number it's like 60 degrees. Don't quote me but I know it's not straight up.

It's suppose to be last in first out so it's early in the engine disassembly instructions.

can just be build up of crud in the the hole in the cases.... i found a light rub with emery paper in the hole helped it come out easily...... i wouldnt recommend emery paper on an engine you werent stripping down for rebuild though

Not sure, I looked and didn't see anything unusual. The oil hole towards the crank didn't seem to have a lip on it. I think it really is getting hung up on the crank gear or the distributor gear is actually getting caught on something just below the distributor bore on the case itself. It doesn't matter for the bug, just wound up using a cut up distributor which works fine.

I did recently decide to go crank-trigger on my bus as well. I put the tool on the drive gear and it popped right out with no resistance at all. Go figure...

Maybe the thrust washers are getting hung up in the groove on the bottom of the drive and the crank gear?

I'm with Devastator on this, I encountered the same problem recently and it ust so happened to be the washers hangin up on the crank gear. A slight bit of persuation with a long screwdriver through the FP hole did the trick
