Re: my stock 1600 dp turbo build!
I haven't had any trouble with My Bocar carb running out of fuel that I can tell.
I have the float level lowered a bit and also have the stock float needle valve.
Try a short piece of hose clamped on the fuel bowl vent before doing too many other jetting changes. That made the biggest difference on my carb and it might on yours.
Cheaper than buying or drilling jets.

Is it a bigger air corrector than standard? GT Tuning talk about using a smaller one.
No idea if its any use...

I had a 0.9 to begin with but it was far too rich on boost so I increased it to lean it out.bazibbo wrote:Is it a bigger air corrector than standard? GT Tuning talk about using a smaller one.

Now yesterday on my short drive to work I thought I could smell something hot, my afr went up and down and my wipers slowed up, I turned to look behind me to see a melting smoking wire, I pulled straight over and tuned of the ignition, by this time I couldn't breate in the cabin so I got out. It was totally full of white smoke by this point, I stuck my head buck in and began to disconnect the live from the battery and got my fire extinguisher ready. Thankfully it never actually caught fire, well there wasnt a flame as far as I could see. After the smoke had cleared a bit I had a look at what had happened. Bad news, bare wire from the battery, through the body and into the engine bay to the main live on the alternator. I think as it was very wet, rain had dripped through a crack in my deck lid vent cover straight on to the connector on the alternator and shorted it against the body of the alternator.

These I found after I had been recovered home, it made me realise how very very lucky I was.
Firstly this one is the melted wire laying on my fuel return line.

This one is a receipt soaked in oil (the wire burnt through my spare oil bottle!) and very charred

A word of warning, this happened instantly, I mean 10-15 second from normal driving to almost full on fire. I've realised that my powder fire extinguisher may have to be upgraded to a larger co2 one. The one I have cost no more that £10 and boy did I regret that when i was standing waiting for flames to show!!
Today I will find out if the alternator is shot, I think the battery is ok and I will set about rewiring the rear end. I think due to the heat involved it will be every wire that travels through that part of the body that goes over the inner wing into the engine bay so lights and engine!

Re: my stock 1600 dp turbo build!
It's bad but I'm very lucky really.
Started the repairs yesterday this is what I found

The whole loom has fried and needs replacing, everything from the battery to the alternator including the rear lights.
So I found a loom for an old triumph in my granddads garage and set about making a replacement, everything labeled up both ends colours matched where I could. It took some head scratching but I'm pleased with the results and by the time I done the last few wires it was getting pretty neat!

Addressed the blocks under the rear seat too

While I was in there I popped in two spares and two wires for oil pressure and temp senders.
Having a nightmare with the alternator it seems that the insulating plastic on the top has melted. I have tested it with a multi meter and when the thread is lifted upwards the base inside will short on the body and show a conection from the body to the thread on the meter! I need to open it up and see if it's screwed!
I'm gutted I have to take off the carb and everything to sort it. I hope it's salvageable

Now you know how important a good wiring job is.
Take the time to do it right and protect those wires where they go through a metal hole.
The vibration will wear out the covering and you will have another short.
That hole in the above pic is crying for a grommet to protect it.

Ouch!
Think I'll revisit my wiring whilst I'm engineless.
Looks like you're cracking through it though.

Re: my stock 1600 dp turbo build!
Well I had a really good day saturday till I realised the shorting alternator, I don't want to bodge it up and risk another short in the future. Fingers crossed it will only be the top bit that's shot not the whole thing.
Does anyone know where I could get a replacement one of these or even what its called!?
