type 1 engine case that doesn't make sense???
Hey my buddy just bought a 1776cc from a VW swap meet and we cant figure out what a plate is for on the front passenger side of the case just between the oil pump plate and push rod tube its shaped like an exhaust flange and neither one of us can figure out what its for my 1835cc doesn't have it its just a solid spot on mine. the I.D. stamp is underneath the push-rod tubes on the passenger side its blank where the number should be underneath the alt stand, but it doesn't match any of the stock VW numbers but it has a VW stamped beside the number? does anyone know what its for? and do aftermarket cases allowed to have the VW seal stamped on them? also I have only been apart of this web site for about 2 weeks and a (VW owner for 6 months) everyone has been extremely helpful I really appreciate all the help!!

Pretty sure that's where you could install the type 3 oil dipstick. My aftermarket aluminum case has the same thing and that is where I have my turbo drain connected. As long as you've got the plate installed over it, you don't need to worry about it.

I agree on being a station wagon oil fill hole.

All late cases seem to have that hole despite the cancellation of that model in 1974

Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Yes, many engine cases were sold as "universal", meaning they could be for the upright Type 1, 2 or 3 engines...the latter requiring the different dipstick port. Here's a photo of my OEM mag universal case with this port, covered by the adapter plate:
