Covin 911 Running Megasquirt 2110cc type 1 motor

Post by mutley666 »

Hello Folks.
Thought I would include my build on the thread.
I have been building a Covin 911 kitcar, which is based on a shortened type 3 floorpan.
I have a type 1 2110cc engine built by Paul at "Harry Harpicks" with all the usual stuff fitted.
82mm Crank, 90.5mm pots,Lightened flywheel, Balanced crank-flywheel and clutch.

I am running Megasquirt V2 extra with a relay board and Bosch 3-wire idle valve.
Ford EDIS system to control spark with 36-1 toothed wheel fitted to crank pulley.
Wideband 02 sensors from 14 point 7, (DIY assemble yourself) and works great!
Modified "Mexico" F.I inlet manifold to take a 50mm throttle body and runners using Porsche 944 Bosch injectors, I think there about 220lbs. If I decide to fit a Turbo I will obviously fit bigger ones.
Garret T25 turbo from a Saab, (not fitted yet)
The dash uses Porsche 924 Instruments and was designed and built by me so I think it is unique!? and I couldnt afford a set of 911 Instruments!!

Had quite a bit of fun setting up the system but after a lot of studying its now much better.

Here is a Youtube video I did last month,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Jfu-ChcZTo

And a few pics of stuff! (Note, I took these before I fitted the bigger throttle body) The youtube vid will show the bigger one!

I am trying to source a exhaust silencer that has an entrance in the middle so I can adapt it to my existing flange and then run a tailpipe tube from left and right sides. Any ideas? The closest I can think of is a Mazda RX8 rear silencer but they are not cheap! and I dont want stainless cause I want to chop it about a bit!

Very nice!

What camshaft? What are your idle Kpa map values?

Its got an Engle 110 installed. I didnt want to much of a wild cam as Turbo´s like short durations. I also kept the compression to about 8 to 1 because I wanted to be able to add a turbo at a later stage. I would only run about 5 to 7 psi to start and see how things are.
I have a Garrett T25 from a Saab 9000 but its watercooled aswell as oil cooled can it be used with just oil cooling it?
The idle KPa´s are about 60 if I remember.

No need for water cooling, just leave the jackets open to air. How's the new wideband from Alan @ 14.7? I have an original JAW kit that still works, but the new unit looks tits. Nice car!

I am really digging that covin, the motor sounds great too. That thing is going to have one heck of a smooth ride with the type 3 pan.

The company folded years ago but there are still a few around.
I converted mine to LHD and custom made the dash. I was planning on re-registering it here in Spain but they have changed the laws regarding kitcars so no chance.
Its correctly registered on UK plates, so I will probably sell it when I have finished trimming it inside.
I am using genuine 911 electric windows and it is remote locking on a keychain.
I would love to drive it for a bit but dont want to risk it getting impounded!
Hopefully someone will buy it from Gibralter.

They always shelf the good stuff. I wonder if porsche led to the covin demise.
