a few random questions

Post by Frogbob »

1.) Does anyone know the size of the bolts that hold the sender into the fuel tank?
2.) I want to start sanding all the rust and paint off my car. What type of sander should I invest in, the ones that spin or belt or? (btw the guy before caked spray paint on it, its very very thick) I heard if you sand it with some gritty stuff you'll mess up the metal underneath so I don't want to get it wrong.
3.) Also, I can't find anywhere the pipe or tubing that runs from the refueling hole to the gas tank.... Can anyone give me the name of the part or what type of rubber, metal size etc so I can just go buy it?

Thanks for reading and any help you can offer

I will answer these in reverse:

3] Depends on your year. You will want to search around for "fuel fillup hose". I had to replace mine recently and it is not expensive at all. Make sure you buy some yellow teflon tape [NOT WHITE, yellow is designed for gas, white will dissolve] to seal the ends up with as you're installing it, to prevent leaks.

2] You'll want an orbital sander [one that spins]. You can strip the gunked on spray paint off first before you start sanding

1] Not sure about the bolt size, that makes me think you have an earlier model Bug. [pre-68?] I think it was after 67 that they switched to a screw-in sending unit.

What year are you working on? Any pictures? :D

I meant with media blasting. It's not the cheapest solution [will run you somewhere around $400], but it is one of the best ways to get down to bare metal [I would say THE best, but I'm sure everyone has a different thought on the matter] and properly treat your rust. Can only be done if you're taking the body off though.

If not, then I guess you'll have to sand it. If it is really as thick as you say, then that may not work. Someone else should now pop in with more experience removing tons of paint buildup without blasting it. >_>

As for the fuel sender, you should be able to remove it by unscrewing it counter-clockwise from your tank, if the tank is stock.

no sorry i didn't explain it clearly. The fuel sender I bought didn't come with the screws I was wondering if you knew the size so I could buy some to install it.
