Type 1 keyed and splined differences?

Post by sandfantom »

My sandrail came with a type 1 trans in it and I was having problems with it staying in second gear. I realized that it would probably need to come apart, so I decided I might as well try to find some close gears for third and fourth and maybe change the r&p. I found a gear set from a "keyed fourth gear" trans that included a 5.14 r&p, not really knowing what I had in my rail.

Yesterday I took apart the rail trans and found out it has a "splined fourth gear" gear set in it. Every thing looked real good, just must have been out of adjustment. 1st/2nd fork (brass) looked like new.

My question is, what gears, sliders etc. will interchange between the two transaxles. It is obvious that the 4th gear will not, but in visually comparing the two, most everything else looks the same. I really want to put in the lower r&p set as it sure would help the driveability of my rail.

Also, any suggestions on 3rd and 4th gear ratios? Am looking at a 1.44 and 1.21 or there abouts.

I searched back several pages and really didn't find any info on this, so any info is appreciated.

Berg modifies late mainshafts to accept keyed gears (I used one to build the `65 III trans in my son's drag toy, in order to have the stronger 3.78 First and use a keyed 4th I had on the shelf).

LATRANS020 costs $111. I picked up a used one (at theSamba or eBay, don't recall), IIRC I paid <$75.
