Engine Replacement *sigh*
Did not think my engine was seized but it appears this is the case as the bolt in the crankshaft turned and turned...am told my engine needs to be replaced--that being said, and so I do not get ripped off, I have been getting pricing all over Atlanta area to replace engine--just engine cost seems to land about $800-$1400; add labor and we are looking at an additional $500 (not sure why as from what I can tell, takes an hour or less to remove old engine and about an hour to drop in and connect new)--trying to verify I am not getting incorrect pricing. Thanks,

Depending on the engine you're looking for, you may end up paying more or less than that - if you're looking for a used turn-key 1600dp with nothing unusual, you can probably get one for that much or less. When you say the bolt keeps turning - are you turning over the engine, or is the bolt stripped and just turning inside its hole?
Assuming that the engine you buy is ready to run, $500 seems awfully expensive for the install. Are they including new throwout bearings, transmission mounts, and clutch plate in that price? Or is that just the cost to reconnect four bolts, three wires, one cable, and a fuel line?
David58 is not far from your area, he may be able to help you out, both in sourcing an engine, and in installation - you should get in touch with him.

Re: Engine Replacement *sigh*
Simply removing one engine and installing another which is "turn-key" ready and in a configuration which is 100% compatible with your car shouldn't take more than 1½ hours of shop time...add another ½ hour for minor complications, and perhaps ~$20 for incidentals like new fuel hose and FA hose.
However, if the new engine is only complete to the long-block stage, it can easily take the better part of a day to transfer all of the external bits (intake & exhaust systems, charging system, clutch, sheetmetal, etc.) Even longer if time is taken to properly clean & refinish the parts as required so that your new engine looks new.

"Used turnkey engine" - seldom happens in the vw world. I'd be very careful. Unless you personally know the history, count on front end refurbishing/refreshing. Bus engines will only go so far without valve jobs. You would be dollars and risk ahead by going with an aircooled vw specialist. As noted, david58 may be able to point the way locally.
