Vac advance issue. Weber 48's on a 2.1 in a Westy

Post by HeliMike »

Hey all. I have been working on this "conversion" I'm doing on an 85 Westy for a friend of mine who owns a VW shop here. He is too busy to do it so he's paying me to do it.
The Van was originally a 1.9 2WD Automatic, but now after 4 weeks and a lot of cuts and bruises, cursing and swearing - this van is now a Syncro with a 2.1 with Dual 48 Webers.
I know... flame away for going to carbs but this isn't mine and I am just doing what I am told. It's been a tone of fun at times because I really want to go WBX in my 67 Beetle but I will save that for another topic and another day.

I've alread port-matched the intakes to the WBX heads and had the engine running (before we pulled it and sold it to a desperate customer). After a bunch of mousing around with the carbs and what-not, I am trying like hell to figure out a dizzy to use.
When I pulled the FI out of it I left all the stock ignition stuff in the van and had it functioning. It has a vac/retard diaphragm dizzy on it which I REALLY want to use because I hate HATE HATE mechanical advance dizzys... Did I mention I HATE THEM?!?!? haha
Anyways, problem is it doesn't seem I have enough of a vacuum signal to operate the diaphragm on this distributor or any other VW one I have tested. My max vac signal was around 6-7 in/Hg (gauge) at the carbs (they have the vac ports on them) which would barely move the advance if at all. I tested a 66 Beetle with a PICT 30 carb on a 1500 single-port we have at the shop and warmed up at idle with the choke off, was pulling 20 in/Hg at idle which was perfect - not the case with this carb setup. IIRC, the Bentley says minimum of 14 in/Hg is needed for the vac advance.

Am I missing something here? How do I get more vacuum out of this setup? I'm not a "mechanic" but I have the abilities I just don't know enough about all this. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Oh and it's getting a new engine built to justify those huge carbs. From what I know it's a 2.1 crank, DJ pistons, FK 41 cam (maybe) and a Beetle header exhaust. We'll probably drop the 48's for some 44's or 40's too. It was more of a joke until I went ahead and put em on!

Any ideas or comments as to what the hell I can do here?

Also, anyone recommend a good or better cam than the FK41 to run with hydros? Any other "tricks" that I can do to get a little more poop out of this thing? We do complete engines and heads here but this is a new "realm" for the both of us.

Greatly appreciate any help guys.
Cheers
-Mike
