The MANX Thread

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Thanks for the compliments it was the first thing i ever built and i think it turned out great. Turbos are a lot of fun but im sure they're way more fun behind long travel suspension. Motor is nothing special just a T3 limited to 9psi full-flowed 1915 with slip-ins, stock heads, cam from AJ Sims, pertronix electronic ignition, and a 40 side draft.

Engine is a 1955cc T1 with an EFI shroud modified to work with a T4 oil cooler in the doghouse location & full flow filter using a Berg pump cover. Ignition is an 010 with an all Toyota electronic conversion. Stock weight, 8 doweled flywheel with a dealer installed A/C option crank pulley used for more flywheel inertia. Cam is a Howard's H1 grind with 1.25 rockers. Carb is a DGV with an elevated float bowl vent with an owner-built filter adapter due to how poorly the available aftermarket pieces fit, all external plugs epoxied, , on an individual runner intake center, fed thru a marine spin-on fuel filter. Clutch is a Fuchs 200mm T2 pressure plate with a solid center disc with Ferodo friction material. T/A is a stock 002 with 5.38 gears and an Autostick starter. Complete Thing trailing arms (brakes, stubs, CV's, 1/2 shafts) and a 1/4" CnT'd beam. Floors replaced with once flat (but no longer) 10ga sheet.

Some of these are ancient scans.

Since Harley's grampa Danny raced midgets Sprints and Track Roadsters with my dad back in the 40s and 50s, and a generation in between Marty was a top contender in desert offroad racing back in the 70s and 80s and Harley and Christian have kept it going with grampa's help with their Class 12, Trophy Truck, etc.,...yeah Letner is a pretty familiar name.

Here is a pic of mine! I just completed it, or at least completed enough to enjoy driving a few days before Christmas, back in December 2011. It took a little over a year and a half to get it this far from a ground up build. In order to help finance the project, I had to sell both my 1960 Turbo Bug and my beloved 2 seat manx that we had owned for close to 10 years. The family had outgrown the 2 seater, so i built a new 4 seater.

Some Specs:
Subi ej20 turbo engine, Link ECU, intercooled, STI VF39 turbo and tuned by CamTuning
Autometer Ultralite Tach, Boost, water temp, oil press, volts
Pioneer HD Radio for the tunes, 500watt amp, 4x 6.5" speakers, Infinity 8" subwolfer
002 bus box, all stock...... 10* tranny mount BugPack T shifter
Crow Belts, Subaru Legacy front seats, Jeep Wrangler rear bench (thats removable)
Chassis is all 1.5"x.095 DOM and almost 100% bent, notched and welded in my gerage (i did steal a few ideas from pics of other manx on here though)
Fox coil overs with remote res. all 4 corners
5x5 rear arms, jamar proX micro stub 4 piston, 930 raceprep CVs
A-arm front, Tatum rack & pinion, Grey Area Technologies 4 piston breaks
Old school Jackman steel wheels, 15x8 rear and 15x6 front
Tires BFG All Terrain KO, 32x11.5 15 rear and 30x9.5 15 front

Thanks Guys! No, I didnt build the A-arms nor the 5x5s. The A-arms are actually a kit that i got from MGM/FRP (Scott). Its a kit, where the front bolts on after you cut the front bulk head off the stock pan and then weld on a plate to the center channel. Then you attach your chassis to the a-arm assembly with 4 3-bolt flanges.

I doubt that very much; duning is a family activity. The next generation of our dune family has now starting less than a month ago with a Great Grandson... and he already has a quad to learn on just like his mother and aunt did. Two rails, my glass buggy, My Pilot, his late great unkle's Odyssey and a bunch of quads just in our family not to mention what those who ride with us have.

I don't think I could ride in rear facing seats without doing the Hansel and Gretel thing but some can.
