can you use a 'normal' mild steel 36-1 toothed wheel for halls though?
in the manual it says it needs a flying magnet wheel instead of a plain toothed one
http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms2extra/MS2 ... n.htm#hall

The megamanual is a fine document, but it has many small errors.
Like that one about "flying magnets"... looks like it was pulled from a '70s textbook.
Read the link about hall sensors for crank triggering...

Any (non SS) steel toothed wheel will work, although Halls like square teeth and the teeth gap needs to be wide enough.
(same applies to VRs, but they prefer pointy teeth for best accuracy)
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Probably not, as long as the teeth are squared off/flat sides and the valleys are deep enough, you should be able to adjust it out.

It's more critical to make sure the gaps are wide enough for that specific sensor to "see" the gap...
Different sensors have different requirements.
