AA 92 Thickwalls with Mahle pistons

Post by louis123 »

Hello!
I currently have a set of 92 thickwalls, and i was planning on using them in this current build.
But i want to keep the door wide open for a turbo later this year and from what i read around, the hypereutectic pistons are not
the best choice for a turbo.
So i have 3 options, selling the thickwalls and buying a set of AA 94 forged or getting a set of Mahle 92s.
And using the forged mahle pistons with the thickwall cylinder.
Is there anything i should know or would have to do to properly use/mix the pistons and cylinders?
Different piston to cylinder clearence?
Expansion rate?
Other option, I would not mind getting a set of wiseco or JE and using them with the thickwalls, but they dont seem to be available in 92...
What would you do?

Thanks!

Ever thought of ceramic coating the pistons you already have ? Im going down the same path as you in regards to the turbo option.i have used ceramic coated pistons in diesel motors with excellent results

I just had an engine built with the AA 88 mm thickwalls and will be running up to 14 lbs. of boost.

Mini has been running AA's for a few years now without problems.

Detonation is what will kill them. Watch your AFR's and work up slowly to the big boost numbers and you should be ok.
