Can Meistersatz CV Joint Grease be Used for Wheel BearingS?

Post by Jim Ed »

I have a problem with wheel bearing grease getting old and some of it drying out.
I was thinking of using Meistersatz c.v. joint grease for the wheel bearings.
Would this be O.K. to use?

I've used it the other way around with success, but I imagine it would work poorly this way...w/cylindrical roller bearings.

Not to mention the temperature compatiblity, the CV grease is designed for a much cooler environment.

Any grease is better than no grease, but it's better to use a specific wheel bearing grease in the wheel bearings.

These come to mind.

Castrol LM (general purpose wheel bearing grease)
Castrol LMX (formerly AXPT - a blue coloured super-tacky grease for wheel bearings)
Castrol HTB (High Temp Bearing grease - virtually non-melting Bentone grease - recommended for hot running disc brake setups)

All are very good. My Isuzu truck and heavy two-car trailer use the LMX for the wheel bearings (980,000km on the truck!); and I've used both the LM and HTB in my bug with no probs (the ORIGINAL bearings are still in the bug after 248,000 miles and 42 years).

I'm sure other brands have similar greases (I've been using Castrol for 40 years so I'm familiar with them).

I save the CV grease (often called "Moly" , or "EP" extreme pressure - containing Molybdenum Disulfide) for the CV joints. I use Castrol LMM (which is LM with Moly added).
