SA Trans with RGB - worked on the ground, stuck on the bus!

Post by Stray Catalyst »

I'm working on another step in my eternal project. I installed a used 1965 SA trans with RGBs into my 64 bus. When it was on the ground, I turned the input shaft with a clutch plate, and watched both RGBs appear to turn correctly. Now, after much effort, I have it installed... and the passenger's side wheel doesn't turn.
:x

The guy who sold me the trans didn't charge much, but also didn't guarantee it. He salvaged it from a rusted out bus that he was parting out. The driver's side wheel turns, and the input shaft, when rotated, will turn that wheel. I didn't think to check if the RGB was spinning the hub, or just the RGB itself was rotating on the passenger's side when I tried it in the driveway. I have two more RGBs, but they're stuck to the dead transmission on the driveway behind the bus, with the castle nuts so firmly attached that I'm going to have to remove them with a cutting wheel - I've tried every other tool, broken a 1/2 inch ratchet, and bent a couple of cheater bars trying to remove either of them already.

So, is there an easy way? I've already tried several hard ways, none of which has worked for me so far.

Grab one of the output shafts of the RGB and turn it. The other side output shaft should turn in the opposite direction. That is normal. It shouldn't matter whether it is in gear.

A good impact will get the nuts off.
My axle nut wrenches in days long past were sockets welded to 2"x3/4" stock ~3' long
2" pipe for cheaters.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
