piston coating

Post by fastback »

I have some forged JE pistons for my next WBX turbo build that needs som machining( notching for valves)
the issue is that the piston crown is coated.
would it be best to keep as much coating as possible leaving only the notched areas in bare alu?
or remove all coating of the piston crowns

This is better answered by Calico Coatings in North Carolina, USA.
They should be able to tell you about the adhesive strength of the coating once the surface has been penetrated.

thx yama
i 'm pretty convinced that the coating wills tick if i macine the pistons
my worries is more on the thermal area.
if the bare aluminium surfaces would take up more heat ..if u see what i mean
so it would be better to remove all coating to haev more bare alu surface area to take up heat.??

It will all be carboned over in no time. I wouldn't worry about it. Just make sure to debure after notching.

i see your point ateve , running E85 (which i'm gonna run ) does'nt build up nearly as much carbon as normal fuel.
