Fuel fillup tube
Hello,
Can someone explain the replacement of this tube on a 1971 Beetle? I ordered a replacement to repair the leaky original, and it seems to be a different part.
The tube in my car currently has a braided line screwed into it near the fillup port, secured with a hex nut. The replacement tube is just a tube with no holes in it. Do I have to cut a hole into it or what?
I'll post pictures when I get home later if they are needed.
Here is the part I ordered: http://www.jbugs.com/product/311201219A ... s-gas-caps
Sorry for the rambling, I'm just a n00b and not sure how to approach this.
Thank you either way!
Patrick

Pics would help.
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

I think you are supposed to cut it in half but, i could be wrong.71superAS wrote:Hello,

This replacement hose is 8 1/16 inches long - which is a long enough peice for the 68-74 Karmann Ghia and 68-73 Type-3. When used on 68-79 Beetle & Thing - cut hose in half for the 2 shorter pieces required.

Here's what I mean. The replacement part is the correct size and everything, but it is just a tube.
What is that braided line for? I don't have a hole to attach that hex nut to.

Thanks for the replies so far!

See the 2 clamps in the bottom pic that is where the hose you bought fits you have to cut it.

Are you saying that you need the steel piece closest to where the fuel enters, rather than the coupler which joins the steel piece to the tank? It looks like the piece you ordered just couples two
Steel pipes together? Did you order the wrong piece?

Re: Fuel fillup tube
Alrighty then, help a n00b out.
I have a fuel leak from underneath where that pair of clamps is located on the fuel fillup tube. The PO clamped in that padding to help secure it. I have been advised to replace the whole tube to forego all of that clamping business. It ONLY leaks if I fill the gas tank too high, and it lets out high levels of vapor after filling. The tank itself is sound in all places. No leaks from anywhere except from that fillup tube. That's why I was advised to make the replacement. I'd love to fill the tank up all the way.
The new tube I ordered looks to be correct in diameter and length. However, it does not have a place to screw that braided hex nut onto it (at left in the second photo, along the fillup tube). What does that hex nut/braided cable do? Can I just skip it entirely?
If you need other pictures, let me know. I can't find a description of this setup in the manuals I have handy. (Muir and Bentley)

Re: Fuel fillup tube
The braided line appears to go to the expansion chamber.
Anyone know where I can get a fillup tube with the expansion chamber in mind?

That sock ain't stock.
The tube you bought is supposed to be where that cloth thing is on the tank side of things.
There are two rubber seals you also need, and you'll have to cut your new tube to fit

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Heh.
Thanks threevolve, and david58 for basically saying the same thing to me before.
I will clean and cut that area as soon as the seals arrive

I have better luck running without the rubber band / rings that fit under the large hose. The new hose fits so tight it is about impossible to keep the rubber bands in position anyway. I just replaced all my filler and breather lines last week with new parts.

I think I would buy the seals anyway. Eventually that rubber hose is probably going to loosen its grip, and then you'll likely wish you had the seals ready to put on.
At $2 a piece, that's pretty cheap peace-of-mind.
