Hanging out around the shop

Post by KarenTheBug »

Was hanging out at the local VW shop where I get most of my "I can't do that" work done (Bug Haus), snapped a ton of pics. These are the only ones my bug are in  Tons of other bugs there that day, as well as a Thing a guy just bought & brought in for a professional assessment (he got screwed buying a ruster just like I did, just not as badly), and a bunch of T2s.

What makes your car not daily driveable right now? The fuel mileage? If so, a SVDA with some dual Weber ICTs will do the trick. Probably get you in the mid 30's.

Not a daily driver because ...

1. It's a classic car. Can't justify putting that many miles & that much abuse on it.
2. These aren't the safest cars on earth, especially when compared to modern vehicles. I have an insanely long commute (over 60 miles a day, sometmes approaching 70 if there's road work & I have to detour around) going along Interstates and highways, some with 70mph speed limits, sharing the roads with SUVs, eighteen-wheelers, and inattentive teens on cell phones - I prefer having ABS and airbags in my daily.

Even just taking her out for pleasure drives on the weekends isn't much pleasure sometimes with the way folks around here drive - 80+mph on some highways, cutting you off, not paying attention / checking before they make a turn or change lanes. Recently I was in the right hand lane of a three lane road, and a Toyota full of airhead college girls in the center lane next to me almost smashed me in the front driver's side trying to make a right hand turn from the center lane! Not long after that, a soccer mom in a minivan nearly ran me off the road not paying attention (too busy screaming at the brats I guess). Once I had a guy in a jacked up pickup truck try to run me off the road FOR FUN - he was looking at me out the window laughing as he did it. I guess messing with a little Beetle helped him feel like a big man.

Got ya. I'm in LA and everyone driving a Bimmer thinks they have the fastest car on the road. 85 is the new 65 here.

I put a lot of the blame for bad driving on technology that's taken the skill out of it. Automatic transmissions, power steering, power windows / door locks, navigation systems, rear view cameras, cruise control, etc. Yeah, some people are just jerks, and cell phones / stereos are a big distraction, but I think if people still had to actually THINK about what they were doing when driving, we'd see a lot more people actually thinking behind the wheel.

Today, most people don't even "drive" their cars - they just turn the key & point it where the GPS tells them to.

There's crazy drivers everywhere. But if it was mine I'd have it appraised, load it up with replacement insurance, and drive it.

Which brings me to a good question - how do I go about having her appraised professionally, and can I get any documentation of it for insurance purposes?

Call your insurance person and ask - it varies a lot from state to state. I know there are a few( "Hemmings? I don't recall) that will let you state the value of the car, and you pay for its value, so if you have a $30k car you can get it insured to that level - but it costs a lot more to insure than the average antique. They also limited the number of miles a year you could drive - YMMV.

Most states tax you on the supposed value of your car, a good place to check although they may be a little high. Hemmings, I never have felt that they were serious. They value on East Coast prices as I remember and in other places, the value may be lower, sometime much lower. Auction house prices, usually based on the best of the best and the values show it. NADA, maybe but make sure the values are from your part of the country.

Your local Craig's list, I guess that may be as good of a place as any, some people value their sell at Hemmings or auction house prices which they usually aren't. Read the words they use to know if they know what they are talking about. Bad spelling may or may not be a sign post but calling something one name because it is popular when the car is definitely not one is a definite sign something is wrong with their knowledge of what they have. Don't go by one valuation either; check at several cities in your general area to see what is going on with them.

Why do people drive like they do: lack of respect for themselves and others I guess; another sign of the times.

According to Virginia and my last personal property tax statement, I think my car is worth $100. They must just use straight depreciation.

I've poked around Craigs List and The Samba, and my mechanic agrees that a fair value is about $5,500.00 as is right now, probably more up to about the $7k - $8k range once I fix the rest of the rust she has (though it'll likely cost me more than $1,500 to fix it  ). I think she's insured for $5,500.00 right now, which is roughly what I paid for her + the majority of what it's cost me to repair the previous wear & tear, not including all the money I spent to remove the aftermarket parts & return her to stock. Once I get the rest of the rust done, I'll probably look more seriously at getting an official number.

Speaking of aftermarket, the LAST of her aftermarket stuff is going away this Thursday ... I finally picked up some stock style wheels & hub caps to get rid of the eight spoke EMPIs the last owner put on ... and he did a LOT of other non-stock cosmetic work:

1. Remove bumpers, replace with blades.
2. Paint over the chrome headlamp rings.
3. Replace steering wheel with the wheel from a Porsche 914.
4. Replace seats with seats from a Porsche 911.
5. Replace muffler with a glasspack side pipe & header.
6. Replace stock rims & hub caps with EMPI eight spoke alloys (skinny tires in front, fatties in back).
7. Replace in dash AM radio with a CD player.
8. Replace gear shifter with a Chinese knock-off Hurst.
9. Lower the front end on drop spindles.

Once the wheels are on, everything will be done - even putting an original Starfire AM radio (still works!) back in the dash. Everything looks so much better.

There's a bunch of Classic car insurance company's out there. I know Grundy allows you to insure it for whatever amount you want and they don't restrict mileage. My father has his 66 vert insured for $15,000 and it's relatively cheap. If I remember correctly, it's only like $200 a year. I don't know if they use age to price it or not but somehow I could see it costing more for someone who's 25 than it does for somebody who's 65. Just search Classic Car insurance and you'll find a bunch but you could reasonably insure your car for $10,000 with the right company and actually drive it. You're gonna have to pick up a phone and call around to get a real price quote without getting beat to death by emails from a thousand agents. OH and you're in Virginia? You gotta come up north to NJ if you wanna test your defensive driving skills! I love driving down your way because everybody's so relaxed compared to this area! Guess it's probably a lot worse than it was years ago but still better than this mess up here.
