WBX crankshaft strenght
- What is a welded 82mm crank with addded counterweights capeable of?
(Of course fully balanced with all components, delivered from either DMS or DPR)
- Is it possible to achieve up to 700hp or more with this crank, for street-use?
(Not a daily driver engine, just for some useless kilometres with to much hp, and some strip driving)
- Is it necessary to wedgemate when 5*12mm flywheel-pattern?

Re: WBX crankshaft strenght
on the basis of all the 400 hp 1641s with stock cranks i keep reading about, i would say you were on a safe bet easily enough, just use ahendorp bolts in the flywheel and away you go....

Re: WBX crankshaft strenght
So you say no wedgemating..
That would be the easiest, and cheapest in order to change the flywheel.. (note: pre-balanced)
But is there any examples of engines with 700+ hp with welded wbx cranks and no wedgemate?

Re: WBX crankshaft strenght
700+ hp is ALOT !!! I would say it's beyound what a welded crank can handle. It might take the beating
for a while but I doubt it will live for long. Go for a type 1 flange with all type 4 mains with that kind of
HP and skip the welded, wegde mated, dowel pined crank and flywheel.
If you choose to go for a weled crank it needs all the help it can get to transfer the power to the flywheel.
Go for wegde mating, 5 pc 6 mm dowel pins and super bolts for holding and hope it will stay together for
a while.

Re: WBX crankshaft strenght
Thanks for the reply Rolf.
I would not risk the rest of the rather expensive engine with a simple solution as a welded wbx crank,
if it's not "bulletproof"..
So, is really the flanged crank street friendly?
Many different opinions on that subject..
Heads up performance is said to be able to make the flange cope with the thrust,
when mounted brass sides to the bearing.
Anyone with experience of flange+streetuse+to much HP??

Hi.
There is 600hp Wbx engines running with stock wbx cranks. I really dont know(think) that the crank will be any stronger with counterweights added.
Living in Norway has one BIG advantage... you can call or order from Skinne Racing...

i really hope the Welded counterweight DPR ones holds up the same OR higher that a stock one.
has anyone broken a stock WBX one yet due to "to much HP"

Sure is important to balance properly.. Done by a professional..
Will the WBX flywheel-pattern hold the horses when flanged??
I wonder what Skinne is using in his current engine..

A flange crank uses another flywheel bolt pattern at the mounting surfaceSvang1 wrote:Sure is important to balance properly.. Done by a professional..

of the flywheel, it's a big flange. The bolt pattern is larger and uses either 6
or 8 bolts where the WBX/type 4 uses 5 bolts.

A DPR welded WBX crank will allway have the stock WBX flywheel bolt pattern.
I don't know the upper HP limit for welded crank but I have build a 277+
HP normally aspirated oxyboxer and the crank and flywheel are still ok.
Wheel hop and drag slicks are hard on parts including cranks and flywheels.
The problem with a flange crank for street use is that it's not holding up for
a whole lot of engine braking and don't like to have the clutch disengaged for
a long time. The latter was a bigger problem in the past with the split main
bearing behind the flywheel. With the brass thrust rings inserts it's a hole lot
better, but I'm don't know if it's good for lot of real street use.
I think Skinne uses a 86 mm flange crank.

Re: WBX crankshaft strenght
Thats the issue..
Best to keep the stock pattern, of course..
But I will not use it if I can't depend on it..
Don Pauter says its no issue at all with flanged crank on street (of course with the supercase).
Already used in his yellow N/A ghia.
But whats the difference in a supercase, that you cant modify/machine on to a WBX case?
Others have said that Roger Crawford is up for the flange-mod with brass supports,
that will hold the amount of horsepower with streetuse for severeal miles..

Re: WBX crankshaft strenght
So am I hearing that you can use a T-1 crank in the WBX case to get a stroker?

Re: WBX crankshaft strenght
or get a stroked wbx crank from DPR
