need a Clutch master cylinder.

Post by hoodsy »

hi ,anyone have or know where I can get a clutch master cylinder, or a rebuild kit for a ATE clutch master cylinder. Have tried and tried to bleed the system. I get good pressure while bleeding, and I am sure all the air is out of the system, but as soon as I close the bleeder completely and try it I am back to having to pump the clutch repeatedly in order to get into gear. been working on his car on and off for over ten years and this one last issue is my final really big hang up.

This problem can be caused by both master or slave....more commonly the slave cylinder. The slave design was not ideal. It commonly pulls air past its seals.....but is usually slower.
Yes....most likely the master cylinder. The fact that it is inside the car is the common issue. Water vapor levels are high in the winter inside of older cars. This always puts a fine rust ridge on the outside end of the MC right under the washer and snap ring. It causes leakage at the outer seal.

You can use the seals and valves from a vanagon master cylinder to rebuild this...there is no need to replace the piston unless it has cossosion under the flap valve seats because the piston does not contact the cylinder. If there is any rust pitting at the outer end over .001" deep...you need a new cylinder (common).

The vanagon MC is identical bore and stroke. You can bolt it in by making an angle iron bracket for it. The residual pressure valve should bolt up if memory serves.

You can see how the Vanaon MC will bolt up. The only minor issue is a slight change in angle of the pressure pipe.

Thanks for the info Ray. Did I read in a previous post that the brake master cylinder seals from a type 3 ATE fit? I see that rockauto has some of the rebuild kits from ATE. But I think I will look into the Vanagon cylinder. if I can get a seal kit for a Vanagon, I am assuming it would have to be made by ATE to be the correct fit. in the end, it would Probably be easier just to replace the whole thing with a new Vanagon Cylinder.

Yes, seals and flap valves from an ATE type 3 brake master will fit for an ATE clutch master...and seals from an FAG type 3 brake master will fit for an FAG type 4 clutch master cylinder. Thats a very good way to go if your cylinder has no pits.
I use a bottle brush hone by hand to clean up cylinder and inspect. Then I lap it with 600+ grit wrapped on a dowel to get rid of hone marks for better seal. Ray

Check this thread, I posted a pic of the vanagon MC with bracket (altho it is a bit fuzzy) and it works great.

I wouldnt even bother trying to rebuild the 412 one unless new vanagon ones were not available for some reason. I believe it was Ray who recommended this to me.
