"softer welding wire???"

Post by DWP »

Is there a softer welding wire out there. I notice that the wire I am using with my mig to weld body panels is a lot harder after welding than the steel panels. when using a flap wheel to clean up the welds it will cut through the sheet metal a lot faster than the metal from the welder.
The last spool came from lowes, cannot remember the name.

Yes there is but I don't know the specs on it. I saw it in a Ron Clavel (sp) video and he talked about it. It was soft enought to hammer weld it.

You've got to tell us what you have now.

I use E70S6. Haven't noticed it harder than anything else.

Not sure what I have, just a spool from Lowes. One of those ran out in the middle emergency purchasees. I remember seeing somewhere using a different wire.

Most good welding supply houses will carry a selection of different welding wire alloys. I think Lowes carries general purpose wire. I always buy mine at a welding store because I know it is probably fresher than a places like Lowes (no offence meant to Lowes) where you can never tell how long it has been on the shelf or in the warehouse.

Here's a link to an article by Ron Covell, talking about Silicon Bronze welding wire for MIG.
