type 4 front beam with disc

Post by man130 »

I was wondering if any of you 411 guys would be able to help me. Found a complete type 4 beam with shocks and disc brakes ,rotors and calipers.Question is would the disc be able to be installed on the front beam of a 74 thing? or maybe my wifes 79 super beatle. Would like to do the beatle cause she drives alittle fast and stopping better wount'nt be a bad idea.Anyone know if they would be a bolt on conversion? They only want $100 for complete beam .What do you think

Type IVs are MacPherson strut, more closely related to SuperBeetles than to Bugs/Things. There is no "beam" with MacPherson strut, instead you'd see a left and right subassembly and some control arms. This discussion should therefore probably be continued in the Type I Forum, but for now here are the basics:

You're probably looking at a Type III beam. No, it won't bolt up to a Type I chassis. Depending upon the year, you might be able to use the rotors and calipers from it. You'd need aftermarket brackets to attach the calipers to either Thing or Super spindles, and the steering box would work on the Thing, but there would be very few other parts with any value to you. If you put 4-lug rotors on the Thing it'd need different front wheels, too.
$100 wouldn't be too bad for a pair of good rotors and calipers, but you'd still need the brackets.

These would fit the Super, you'd need a different style for the Thing.

If it's a late `71-`73 Type III, the calipers have the wrong bolt pattern and the rotors have the wrong offset for you. Late Type III and early Type IV interchange (and late IV are again different from either) - these parts are getting hard to find compared to the early III/`Ghia stuff, so you wouldn't want to convert to them even if it were possible.
The VIN of the donor Type III needs to be 3x1 226 8738 or below for the brake parts to interchange with Type I. The center-to-center distance on the caliper mounting bolts is ~57mm.
