Waxing after painting?
How long should you wait, after a new paint job, before waxing?

Harryset,
I just had my hood painted and clear coated, the fellow who did mine told me to wait at least 60 days. But after waiting and going back to get the hood buffed out, he was gone, so perhaps he was just buying time?

once a car has been painted and bufffed it can be waxed. If the paint is dry enough to buff its dry enough to wax, at our shop for instance if we painted a car yesterday, we would buff and wax it today. The 30 day wait thing was from back in the day when they used acrylic enamels and other types of paints without hardeners.

That would probably explain why I had two Maaco paint jobs go flat, after waxing, back in the 70's.BUILDER wrote:once a car has been painted and bufffed it can be waxed. Re: Waxing after painting?
Pretty much what Builder said.
(just for fun) I painted back in the day of natural enamels’ and natural lacquers. Each of these two media required different prep techniques as well as laying up the paint. While I never did it, I saw and old body man paint natural (as opposed to synthetic) enamel with the paint heated (to 79 degrees as I remember) which he said; allowed the paint to cure faster allowing waxing or body repairs sooner.
We painted a lot of lacquer jobs and laid on a lot of paint and removed at lot between coats. For custom (show quality) paint, you talked in gallons and rubbing out or color sanding every three (or so) coats. You started with 90% color and ended up with 10% color before going to many coats of clear lacquer. Temperature, humidity, and gun pressure also had a big influence in the paint technique. Today it is easier but more dangerous.
