Race Beetle with Oxy Boxer

Post by Typ 11 Beetle »

Hi everybody,
my name is Holger from Germany , i am reading this Forum for a while now and i am very impressed of you guys here.
Very interesting for me are the articles about the wbx turbos , Matt Keene or Marco Mansi and not to forget Fastback ,this is the way i want to go in the future.
i am the ownwer of a 1302 super beetle from 1972 with an 2.4 liter Oxy Boxer build by Udo Becker.
I put a Megasquirt on it (ms 1 mini ms) with 50 mm dual Throttle Bodies.
First it runs with 48 mm IDA Carburetors and we measured 220 HP on the Dyno, but i think it was an optimistic Dyno. After a fire caused by an leaking Carburetor i switched to efi , and i say,
never again Carburetors. Megasquirt rules!!!

Congrats Holger, very nice setup!!
Did you make it to Spa last weekend? That would be a great place to try out the new engine and EFI system for sure

Are you using MAP as main load, or TPS with those ITB's?

And as far as the conversion from carbs to EFI: there is someone on the STF who has a saying about it.... 'Friends don't let other friends drive carb'd' or something like that

Hope you make some more vids and post them on this site: the car is killer!

Und jetzt richtig auf die drossel, und ein bischen dampf machen!!!!!

Cheers, Robin

The car worked perfect on Saturday but on Sunday 10 minutes before the end a spark plug decided to die.

Wow, so you are the one my friends were talking about: the handeling of your car is phenomenol! Would you mind sharing some details on front and rear suspension mods that were done on the car? I managed to make some pictures of another ex-cup beetle (the blue one at Spa) which appeared to have a completely adjustable single wishbone suspension.
Great driving too! You need to have big bollocks to drive that fast through Eau Rouge
Can`t wait to get the 2276 turbo and a cage in the car and join you on the track...

Cheers, Robin

Thanks ,
the fridge in the rear is for the dry sump tank (10 liters)
The bore is 95 mm with JE Pistons and the Crank is a 82 mm Scat.
The rear axle is 944 without torsions bars and the brakes are from a 996 .
The front axle is a self made single wishbone made of tie rods.
The cylinder heads are original VW Parts but welded by Udo Becker.
Hi located the spark Plugs a little bit different and made the heads stronger for the new bolt pattern of the wbx Case and he changed the postions of the valve guides to provide more room for bigger valves. I try to post some pictures tomorrow.

Because i am preparing to build a Turbo WBX.
I just want to figure out how reliable such an engine can be on long distance races.
My goal are 300 hp with not more than 6500 rev.

I bought one of Marco Mansi's turbo efi wbx motors and clocked up some fairly good milage with the unit.
The cylinder heads were ported with stock valves.
Cam was a scat c25 with scat followers and manton push rods.
Efi was an 8 injector set up with Wolf v3, ford cosworth throttle body with a custom plenum chamber, garrett t3 off the escort cosworth and custom charge cooler.
Boost was controlled by an Apexi boost controller
This was in a Vanagon crew cab which weighs on close to 1.5 tons.
On high boost it was close to the 300bhp mark.
Only down side is oil cooling issues.
If you go this route you will need to dry sump it. This will increase the oil capasity and this will allow a good quantity of cooler oil as the turbo will make thing boil up pretty quick.

I'm in the middle of a rebuild with cylinder head improvements, tcs 20 cam and a T3/T4 turbo and i'm with out a doubt going with a dry sump set up.
