August Off Roader of the Month

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

August Off Roader of the Month

Post by Hedrock »

This month's OROTM is still an STF pup but I'll tell you what... He sure has jumped in with both feet and hit the ground running. There is no doubt that there has been many hours put into this project already with a boat load more still to go. I for one can't wait to see this one done... I just hope I finish mine first so I don't have to start again and "borrow" some more way cool ideas  .

I think his first sentence on his first post pretty much sums it up, at least it does for me  .

There I said it!
I admit it!
Will I start to get better now? Gosh I hope not.
Looking back through his thread I don't think he had a chance. There is a lot of history with VW's and his family. Here is just a couple of examples...

And an old one of his own...

And another... See what I mean...

Image

And now on the the current project..

Roof removal... I've never seen it done like this before

Image

Image

Adding Length and width to the body...

4inches out of the windshield and dash
Image

8+ inches out of the rear quarter
Image

Now the part I thought was amazing. If you don't have a "vert windshield frame... make one

Go get a drop cloth and cover your key board before you gaze at this pile of bling...

Our first pics of the frame...

Some one off door hinge supports...

And a pic of the front end work...

Thank you Daron for sharing your project with us. This ride will be one unbelievable car when you get it done
Collecting parts again... No I'm not going to say why!

Great pick. Daron congratulations and thanks for your wit and knowledge. Your car is looking great.
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

And thanks for sharing all those great pics from your family's history with off-road VWs. Unique hardly begins to describe it.

Nice pick HedrockI Hedrock as passed the ORBOM (or O-bomb) torch on from me to you and a big congrats Daron. The torch is heavy to carry and hot to handle.

It is good to see someone who is not afraid to vary from the well worn trail (no pun intended) and head out on their own. Daron has attacked this build with a lot of thought and enthusiasm not to mention the great work he is doing on his build. It is builds like this and others on this site that move the sport/hobby forward with their changes and improvements.

Well, deserved… well deserved!

What?.....Me?......Seriously?

Seriously?

Wow.... that is a short list I just joined. Thank you...Thank you...Thank...you

You guys have welcomed me in here in a way that is totally indescribable.

I am not much of a computer guy, in fact, I had to have my wife show me how to post the pics  Guess I got that figured out now :D

I had been lurking around here for months prior to registering. I felt as if I had gotten to know a few of the regulars here without even introducing myself. Thus the big introduction we call a "1st post". In fact it was my 1st post ever to any online forum. I had registered to one other before...but that was just to open up locked photos. :D The only other times that I visited online forums was when something broke on my bike, quad,or truck. The problem as you all know....there was always about 2-3 good posts and then the bitch sessions would begin. At first it was kind funny and a little entertaining. But then I would remember why I was there in the first place....To learn.

Then I found STF, and I can probably count on 1 hand the number of threads that I have read, that went a bit sideways...only to be quickly cleaned up by the mods. You guys do a fantastic job here.

I signed up here as way to document my build. In the past I found that I would get to the end of a project and realize that I never took any pics to show how it all got done.( I find that this still happens with the homes that I build) I quickly realized that there is a certain accountability that goes with posting here...Guys start asking for updates pretty quick. I found I kinda like that....and am guilty of it as well.

Thank you all again for the warm welcome....and Lee... AKA(Ol'fogasaurus)....you will be a tough act to follow. I will wear my STF OROTM badge with pride and try not to drop this hot torch you have passed on to me.

Congrats on the major award. Now that you got the picture thing figured out AND being the STFOROTM, you need to step it up with the picture count. Not my rule, it's just the way it is.
