Joxracing's 1966 Baja "The Resurection"

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

bought some cheap lowbacks for the baja, and modified the OG seat frame..
not a big fan of the lowbacks.. but they'll work...
...they are comfy when there stuffed with foam... :P
oh, and i put some lap belts in for safety...

the baja's body is getting rougher by the minute, im gonna really have to strengthen it by some strapping or something...

the motor is also running extremely rough, on the idle it sounds fine, but my power is lagging and its not a smooth acceleration, and it pops and backfires..

could that be the points?

...muddrags are 3 days away...

Cracker,i'd check points, plugs and the timing. also make sure the fuel filter is getting plugged up.
Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.

alright...
soo the points were burnt out.. so i changed them..

and now i have no spark what so ever, i didnt have spark before i changed the points(figuring it would be the points) and i still have no spark after i changed the points..

i also tryed a new coil... that didnt work either, my test light says im getting power from the coil wire, but when i turn it over, its not sparking at all..

wtf is wrong with this now? its almost like it happend over night...

Did you change your condenser along with the points?

Are you sure you set the points properly?

Also, just cause the points are new, doesnt mean they are good. Ive had several sets not work out of the box. Needed to do a little bit of sanding on the contact points, there was manufacturing/shipping residue on them and they didn't work.

Also the reason I like electronic pickup too

okay...

ive tried..
1. new coild with a ballast resistor
2. different dizzy with different points and condensor
3. normal dizzy with new points
4. normal dizzy with new cap and new points

alright, so with the test light, it shows power everywhere including neg/pos spots on coil. both spots on ballast resistor, and condensor...

but very dim light when put to the coil wire out of the coil...

and still no spark.

Sounds like the deal of the day to me.................................................
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

ha, still sounds good.

uhm, went through and replaced all the tune up crap, and she runs amazing...

who knew just a new cap/points could do such wonders with power?
its so much faster.

Re: Joxracing's 1966 Baja..."Full tube time"

Post by Joxracing »

Now a members of the baja's that dont run club!

Took it out last night and tonight, and my accelerator pump was going, and it felt like my clutch was going, which turned out to be a ROACHED throw out bearing...

also, on the trail we lost the heater channel, yeah, the heater channel...
here's a pic...
Image
That bright spot is concrete...

So, i decided its time to really tear this thing down...
Ripped the motor out tonight...
...sitting next to the new one...
Image

so, what im gonna do is..
pull body off
replace all pans
tube it out, as in roll cage..ect...
maybe even a new body?
do different shock mounts for the rear..

and if i get real crazy, im gonna attempt the A-Arm front suspension...

my question's are...
worth the time to switch to IRS right now?
Worth to put a new body on?
Should i try the a-arm suspension?

crazy idea here, long travel ford I beam set up on the baja bug.. crazier than the a-arm idea?
We'll see how this long-term tear down goes.
