Piston design/cyl lenght WBX

Post by fastback »

I'm about to start getting my Volvo cylinders machined and cut to correct length for my long stroke WBX engine
the combo will be a 82mm crank and 99mm cylinders.
The option i'm looking at is

1. keep the stock cyl length
the con's with this is that this need's a piston design that the 3. oil ring comes over the wrist pin. to get the correct compression height. with the rod's i'm gonna use.
the pro's is that the longblock stays original.

2. make the cylinders 3mm longer and have the option to run stockish style pistons.with this the 3. oil ring comes in the "normal" position
the con's is that i then need a 3mm spacer for the waterjacket seal. and modify the exhaust.(but i'm uilding a new wxhaust anyway.. :) )

any thought's :) ? ?

Du får problemer å montere oljeringen. veldig trangt...

ja ser den . men det skal vel gå. kanskje unødvendig tungvint.
heller mot å dreie til lange sylindere :)

There are ways to slip the cyls over the rings with the pistons mounted already. It has been done. You just need the right ring compressor band, probably a custom made pliers-type deal, and, I would guess, a lot of patience.

But I like the extended deck idea. I've thought about this a lot, myself. I think to do it right you'd have to weld on extra aluminum and then have it milled off flat. Rocky and I have discussed this. Sure opens up the possibilities for longer strokes. The intake and water crossover pipe and hose extend easily; widening the exhaust is no big deal.

Might need to extend the head studs somehow, depending on how much width you add. 3mm is only two threads less in the stock nuts, though; that ought to be OK. If you use slip-in expandable pushrod tubes instead of OEM, the head assembly should be easy enough. Then you just need cut-to-size pushrods.

Make it so! I wanna see it.

Yes I have cut off the jackets with a saw cut off blade to save about 5mm from the jacket so I can weld it back on to the stock jacket to make a long stroke engine. Rocky

yeah that is also a option.

Well i have now started measuring up the cylinders for machining.

what is recomended cylinder skirt wall thichness??
is 1.5mm enough??

Fastback, can you not get a je piston set made to suit ?. I'm running 82 x 98 with 4.5 rod, tho' the oil ring is near the pin bore, just thought in your location it would be better financially.
1.5mm lower spigot is more than my 98s have i guess from memory, and a lot more than many big bore air cooled barrels as you know. this all looks an interesting topic. Ive shaved my mahle piston tops a tenth to get deck, I'm also looking for spare 98mm rings and top seals, tho' I'm looking to get stock ones opened up somehow, maybe a press tool, as the outer dia' is stock. i may endup having pistons made to suit already available 98 rings if my mahle's ever fail or burn.

I looked at some 94mm type 1 cylinders here and they are 1.2mm cylinder skirt thickness.
then i asume 1.5 will be enough

the plan is to order a set of custom pistons
if they come from Je , Ross , wiseco etc is not decided yet :)
looks like i can use 100mm bore , then i have cylinder thickness of 5.5mm

Hey fastback, did you ever make any progress on the longer wbx?

Yes, I would like to know also. What was the cost of the pistons 100mm ones? Thanks Rocky
