I am back in Business.

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

HEHE...

You will get me OT in my own thread for sure if we go off on a cub tangent.. I have another one just almost like yours also...(and a 129 parts machine) it looks very close except it has the headlights... and hydrostat. It is down right now because some idiot..  busted one of the front spindles doing wheelies

The one in the frame my grandfather bought brand new in 1972.. it is a 149... hydraulic lift on the deck, disk brakes and all... Well.. he sold it to my dad... and it was the first thing I ever really got to "drive" as a kid... Well.. Dad sold the thing when I was 14 or 15... I was mad as hell.. he bought this POS scag... Fast forward.... I buy this house I am at now about ten years later... and flipping through the KC star I see an ad for a Cub 149.. hey.. that perfect... I get out there.. and the guy has the plow, disk, blade, and trailer.. I saw that stuff before I saw the mower.... and I told him.. thats my mower.. I am taking it home with me.. He couldn't figure out why I didn't even want to see it first..... It needed some work then.. and I limped it along until about two years ago... and it got retired... but it is getting new life.. all the stuff not bolted to it in that picture have been sand blasted and painted... Just gota find a decal kit....

and yeah... those diagonals are a good idea.. I will try some out and make sure they don't get to much in the way of my 6'5" backside from sliding into that thing... But I dunno.. this rail has had a tough life.. it has been battle tested that is for sure... I have not figured out, given how well it has held up, if that is a good or bad thing... Proven it is...

Hey...

Instead of Powder coating or Paint... My daughter asked me tonight if we could do the same thing to the buggy that we did to that car a while back..

:P

This stuff fixes REAL easy after changes are made...

I think I figured out why those upper rails running straight in might be a bad idea...

Duh...

Clearance for the tie rods.. Oh well.. they clear fine now... and if I put longer travel torsion arms... an an outboard mounted rack should handle any issues..

The original owner/builder came over on Saturday.. We confirmed that I do have the rail he built.. which is the Green one I posted pictures of in the first post.. So it made the cover of the Kansas City Star in 1978 as part of a story for the World of Wheels event that year.... I got a long way to go to make it that nice again.. But I did good at a local swap meet over the weekend.. Just have to keep after it this week..

Got this far today..

I hung it off the back... The extra weight back there negates the need for front wheels..

If you put it back there you don't have to worry about bending it...

You just steer with the cutting brakes... But it stops really fast.. I am working on some skids to help with that...

Ok... dumb new guy question.. But I figured I would bounce this off ya'll and see what you thought... I put my 1971 XS 650 up for sale.. Project cafe racer bike.. Got an overwhelming response.. and one guy that I am now putting the bike back together for because he wants to trade me the stuff pictured below for a running bike..(it seems like a no brainer to me) Well the damned bike is almost running.. and I have pretty much made the deal.. But I want to know just how much you think this stuff is worth on the market... and if it really is the stuff I need...

First the case.. suposed to be properly lined bored and punched out for 94's by a very reputable VW shop.. welded by # three

Image

Image

Rods balanced by reputable shop.. What are they? stock?? or ??

Image

Heads... flycut and ready for the 94's and ported by same place..

Image

Supposed to be 78mm Stroke.. What am I? drilled for 8 dowel..

Image

The 94's Those look like anything decent

Image

And finally the cam and specs.. Once again.. Who am I...

Image

Image

And yada yada yada... New HD pushrods, finned bolt on EMPI valve covers, Chrome pushrod tubes, a new 009.. and that kind of stuff...

I wasn't asking much for the bike as a project.. but running it is worth plenty more because of what it is... I didn't plan on a big VW engine just because I would rather drive this thing than work on it and tune it all the time... But... what the heck...

whada ya'll think????

Should I make the bike super nice for the guy? or is this stuff worth .... what??

I don't see that stuff being worth more than $1K. Could be worth more, but I don't see the casting #s on the heads or case. Crank looks like a CB super race crank (worth $250). Should be stamped with stroke somewhere. If case is propely machined, clearanced, full flowed, dual relief, etc. Then it could be worth $500. If jugs and rings are still rust free, they are worth about $200-250. The heads don't look like anything special. They don't look like they have relocated spark plug holes, dual springs, etc. They look like latest rage big valve heads to me. I can't see the "port work" though.
If the guy doesn't have reciepts for all this stuff showing what it is or what he had done, it's all worth no more than $1K IMO.

That is about what I was thinking.... He said he spent over 2200 for all the machine work and parts... but... and claims to have receipts.. but uhh how that applies to the actual value of the parts.. well... :P Lighting money on fire next to my rail isn't going to make it worth anymore is it... :D

I had the bike listed for 400 bucks.. and it will cost me about 100 bucks to make it run and operational.. on top of about 15-20 hours...

All I can think though is that I signed up to spend more money.. Lots of little odds and ends needed to have two complete engines sitting at my place.. and still need flywheel ect.... a real carb for a big engine.. ect ect ect...

I haven't seen his stuff in person... I like to think I know my stuff when it comes to building engines.. but my VW experience is very limited..

What should scare me off.. If anything?

If your bike is only worth the $400.00-$600 range then it looks to be a pretty good deal. I'd really like to see the machine work receipt but you should be able to tell if the case has been clearanced for the crank. There that that, i'd do a bit of research on the cam and make sure that it's what you are looking for as far as power band range. And, with that combo you will most likely want to run a decent carb, maybe a 44 weber or something close. I cant remember what your other motor had but you will probably want a bigger one. I'd probably jump on that deal.

It is a Holley 2100... :D  :) And being I am going to be using it street/woods having it a little under carbed would make more useful power where the engine is going to be used the most... Giving up the top end of course... And assuming that cam plays that game nicely...

Not sure how I feel about my holley yet.. On a 1600.. Sure.. and typically I am a big Holley fan Dollars per smile they win hands down... On any of the older mopar stuff I have had, my buddies made me run Carter AFB's.. and I really grew to like them... My dad is into MG's (drives a 1937 TA and restoring a 1954 TF) and he is all about those POS SU's and the Weber stuff.. I was just going to take one of the many 2.2 dodge turbos I have laying around and build a cheapo drawthru system to blow up/burn up the 1600 with the Holley I have... But chit.. with them fancy parts.. now I am going to be falling down that slippery slope of a nickel and dime death... and before I blew a bunch of money on fancy carbs I think any one of these 48mm or 52mm dodge Throttle bodies I have on the shelf would find a nice home on the Rail... and so there it begins... :D

I guess I need to get the points cleaned up on this bike and git er done...

Ohhh and Baja5.. DO you have any idea what that engine might weigh without an intake carbs or tin..
