Airdreams1's 66 BAJA

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Still no more parts back from the Jack wad... But i spent 4 days & nights (including new years) cleaning up the grage & actualy can get 2 cars in there.... So its time to start tinkering withe the Baja...

Im going to try to fire the motor I got back from him. (whats the worst that can happen? it wont run.)
If it wont, oh well. I have a mistery long block out back that Ill put what parts I do have on & try that one... (its supose to run, but leaks oil. What VW motor doesnt?) If its bad as well, then Ill have to wate till I can get some $$$ saved up & buy all the parts nessacery to rebuild one of them my self.... & in the mean time Ill probably get the other crap finished up that I have the parts for.... IRS swap, beam swap, finish up the 4 headlight setup, Pull the body & weld up the cage & make a few mods to it, Put in my 1 pice windo kit, swap out the gas tank...

Not sure which way I should go. Just stay Ball joint (but use a newer one than my 66 & get thing arms later) or go with the link & king I have. Yes I have everything to make the swap to the L/K & its in great shape...
Any sugestions? The car will be driven on & off road ocaisionaly... What would be the advantages of either?

Been working on the motor. looking over everything & tightning all the loose bolts.. Its all used crap, no new parts like promiced (just as I suspected). But it looks like it may run.... Got it Almost ready to fire it up... Just need to get a couple more small things I forgot, & dont have the $ to go get...

So I got bored lastnight & decided to make this:

I had the chrome stick but had no top. Didnt have one when I got it. I made the top with a drill & a file + a buffing wheel. Had the scrap alum

I think it looks prety good... What would be the best thing to use to seal out the dirt & still looks good? (I dont want a huge pice of foam like the buggies book shows.)

Yes I was bored again. Made it with scrap alum dimond plate, sheet metal shears & filed the edges....

Oh & got my trany seal in. (Going to wate till the body lift to do the IRS conversion. Its supose to be easier to do when the body is off.)

Ah! It's the dipstick! I was trying to figure how big it was and couldn't tell. Nice work, especially for no machine tools.

I was just messin with you. The dipstick looks good and you know it.

Throw an engine in it and wear out a set of tires before going IRS. You need to get your baja fix satisfied before you tear it apart again.

Im just playing around till next payday then Ill get the last couple parts for the motor. Then thats going in for awile... Im tired of working out in the grage @ 45 degrees or less...
+ I have to wate till I can save up some coin before I can get the steel for the lift.

As for the scrap. I have lots of small scrap around from my hot rod building days & all the other projects I mess with... I also have a place where I can get it new @ cost or just over...

Nice. Diamond tread is so freaking expensive. What did you cut it with?

on the topic of dipstick sealing, just pull the little boot off of an old spark plug wire, invert it, and push it down the dipstick guide tube. the flared part fits right inside it all snug and cozy.
give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

Things are rarely just crazy enough to work, but they're frequently just crazy enough to fail hilariously.

for the dimond plate. I used a large set of sheet metal shears... (not the cheep litle ones harbor freight sells.)
