Turbo selection for 1776cc T1

Post by Dan Dryden »

Hi.

I'm after some of your opinions about which turbo I should choose for my 1776cc engine.

I've been running a Schwitzer S2a but it has come to the end of its life so I'm in the market for a new turbo.
I was happy with the overall power the Schwitzer made but could do with the power coming in sooner so I'm after a faster spooling turbo.

My engine makes in the region of 190bhp/185nm at 14 psi of boost and 210bhp/196nm at 20psi of boost.
It is fully EFI'd with balanced and counterweighted bottom end, engle tcs10 cam, 044 magnums, 7.5:1 CR, single throttle body and revs to around 6000rpm.

The Schwitzer spooled at around 2500rpm and achieved full boost by just over 3000rpm. I would like to get that power lower down my rpm range, maybe spool at around 2000rpm with full boost by 2500rpm?

I've used the Garrett turbo selection tool and it has come up with a number of turbo's which it thinks would suit my engine:

GT2056
GT2554R
GT2860R

I quite like the look of the GT2554R (BB turbo) which is currently on sale at one of the UK distributors for only £60 more than the journal bearing GT2056. (Both a similar size)

I have been advised in the past to get a T3 turbo but have read on other forums to go with the GT series of turbos as their design is far more efficient than the older T series.
My car is mainly used on the street so I'm after a quick spooling setup, ideally with a nice flat torque curve which starts at low rpm, without sacrificing too much top end power.

Before I go spending my hard earned cash I wanted to know if you guys think the above turbo would give me what I'm looking for or whether I should consider something else?

Thanks in advance for any feedback. :)

I wondered if that would be a little big for the spool response I'm after?

This Forum is about performance ;) Don't talk to strangers.

I'm also looking on a 1970 ccm Typ4 with turbo. Actually unsure about Mitsu Td04-15 (maybe a little big, but good) or a Garrett GT2052. I also look for low end torque, because it's a camper.

the gt2056 is a very good turbo for that.. but why that down low spool if you allready have it. and what is full boost mean. i mean 14 psi is earlier than 20psi. you maybe will lose hp at top end.
i have 318nm at 3400rpm and 250nm at 2800rpm on my 1641cc engine and want it later +more hp at the end.
why not going more cc and same rebuild turbo as right now. its a win win situation ;)

http://www.turboneticsinc.com/catalog

read the catalog some good stuff in there,
also with the turbonetics, lots of parts interchange, so if you don't get the response your looking for you can
just order different parts and change your existing turbo to act differently.

:)

Talk with Shag on here, I believe he can set you strait, or sell you what your looking for. :)

Hi Dan,
Was great seeing/meeting you and your family in Spa!
If you want to save several hundred pound, get a good used turbo from a Suby WRX and you have your spool and 200 hp easily.
Its the TD04L-13T. Lots of turbos in the TD04 family, so pay attention to that exact combination of letters and numbers IF you want fast spool. I run it on my 1200cc and it spools pretty well on that engine, imagine what it does on your 1776!
They can be had for 100,-- whatever currency on ebay :-)

Cheers,
Walter

Thanks for all of the feedback guys. :)
Lots of different opinions to confuse me a bit more! lol

Don't get me wrong, I want as much power as I can get out of my engine but I also want a strong, flat torque curve which starts early in the rpm range..... In other words, I want to have my cake and eat it.

Wally, it was good seeing you at Spa. I was disappointed to have missed you taking your bug around the track though.
I will keep an eye out on eBay for the Suby turbo. :)

Hey wally!
Is the center section of the"TD04L-13T" turbo clockable? assuming you use an external wastegate?
I noticed it uses V-band type of attachment?

I am setting up and engine very similar to the O.P. and am interested as this turbo as a starting point.

Its clockable if you remove the locator pin (very tiny) with a set of pliers or s/th between exhaust and center section
Even with the internal WG, you have 2 or 3 possible orientations iirc.
I like using the Mitsu-subaru turbo's a lot as there is a lot of choice due to them being used a lot on stock and tuned subbies and they can be rebuild, taken apart easy and seem very durable. Just make or buy a bell-mouth exhaust flange once and you can use that with most everything Suby as most all years/models used the same downpipe exhaust flange.
The V-band flange is just to locate the turbine section to the CHRA. Nice method. Use a lot of WD40 and a big hammer on older turbo's the seperate the mated surfaces (with that locator pin)

I'm watching quite a few of these TD04L turbos on eBay right now. They seem a good cheap solution. I also like the idea of using the internal wastegate if possible. My current external wastegate isn't silenced so things get pretty noisey when it opens up!

I've seen the downpipe flanges for sale also so can adapt that to fit my current downpipe / exhaust system but I'm wondering how to get it to fit my CB hideaway header :? . I was wondering if I could buy a T3 flange to match the header and weld it to the TD04 turbine housing? I'd rather not have to cut and weld a different flange onto the header.

How did you fit yours to your 1200 Wally?

Thanks.

So I've taken Wally's advice & bought a used TD04 from a 2004 Suby WRX with 56,000 miles. I probably won't fit it until the winter so will update this thread when I do. It is physically a lot smaller than the Schwitzer S2a, so I think that is a good sign that I'll get the quicker spool I'm after. ;)

Thanks for the point in the right direction Wally. :)
