Making progress...

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

I'm glad you caught my joke. I did edit the post to clarify what/why I said what I said.

I always over-buy when picking up raw materials. Looks like a bit much for upper shock mounts! Never hurts to have left over material on hand!

Made some doubler plates, and this is my first take on the shock double shear tab. I still need to take around a quarter inch off the bottom to line up the hole. Just lining things up, getting an idea how it looks.

That it looks like you added a doubler plate on top of the trailing arm is a good idea. It should transmit loading down the sides of the trailing arm also for additional strength. Look at the angles of the shock during the suspension travel also to keep the mount's shape transmitting loading more easily.

The clearance hole for the bottom shock eye isn't finished. My batteries died. My drill press has my coping fixture in it and I need to do more coping still. That hole will be welded 100% along with the outer perimeter of the plate.

About another 1/8" off the bottom and we'll be good. That is not the correct bolt, just using it for alignment purposes.

Another step closer to the weld bench.

Moving on to the doubler plates for the bump stops. And the mounts for the bumps. Then the trailing arms come off for welding.

Four of five parts made for the upper shock mount. After these are welded in, another tube coming up from the shock will join the roll hoop intersection.

Whats the hole in the plate on the arm? Is the for clearance on the rod end?

Skid, on that last pix you have a short shaft that you are attaching another tube to as I think it could be a problem... maybe!

What if you didn't use it but joined the mounting tube to where it is and to where the short tube would be. Much, much stronger but would cause you to rotate the lower shock different angle than fore and aft too. Something to think about anyway. it is the keeping of the rotation at the top and bottom straight with any motion created. Again, I am not seeing this in 3-D also  .

A lot of the guys I have seen do this but were using a different spring and shock setup.

The hole in the doubler is for clearance for the shock end. Rather than move the existing mount upward to allow the 1/4" doubler, I am just adding clearance to the doubler. The hole will be welded 100% around. On the upper mount, another tube will go from where the shock is, up to the intersection of the roll hoop, creating compression strength in line with the shock force. All of this is out of .125" wall.

Here is a similar set up for the upper mount. Picture and fab credit to James Ginsberg.
