MS1 v3 spark output hardware...

Post by andy198712 »

Hi

I’m building a MS1 V3 to be an upgrade from my V2.2

I’ve got to the last part, spark output.

I’ve seen conflicting advice on how to run a coil.

I want to run a single 4 post coil in wasted spark, probably use my old ford edis coil I think as I have it and the plug and wire setup.

Any advice?

Cheers
Andy

Is that able to be fired by a "logic" setup like the 4 post coils from the mkIV 2.0L motors? That is a pretty simple mod on either of those boards.

If just using your Ford coil you will need two bip373s. Run 2 wires from the ecu to the coil as well as 12v. Pretty simple.

Bip373, I’ll order some up :)
Thanks!
So is it technically called a duel coil then? And single coils are like what beetles came with originally?

Not really sure. I'd just call it a 4 post coil. But we also know that it is only 2 actual coils, just with each one having 2 posts. Does your ecu have q16 populated already? That is usually where the first and generally included BIP is located.

Yeah I think in the extra manual it called them dual coils and you need two bips
Pretty sure q16 is still vacant I think.... on holiday at the min and back at the weekend, if not I can find it a home easy enough.

This will be MS1 as I have a chip sat here and then ms3 when I find the board at a good price if one pops up or just cough up and buy new but it’s more expensive here in the uk.
Need to get the car back on the road too! Then turbo it ;)

Depending on where you bought your v3.0 kit, it should have come with the newer BIPs. they get mounted on the bar for better cooling. And if you follow the MSextra instructions its straight forward. Are you going to use the relay board ? if you are, take a look at viewtopic.php?f=66&t=148588 ,I fried a trace when i did mine. easy fix though.

Hi,
i ordered some BIPs and I've mounted them under the board on a second heatsink i added, i'll get pics up of it.

i have added the extra ground jumper as stated in the manual for my ignition drivers though using a spare leg off a component.

but i haven't thought about the relay board yet.... possibly not?
