Just wondering how much HP Type 1 CV joints will handle? I am planning on 200 HP on my new street build and didn't now if I should upgrade to Type 2 CV joints or if the factory ones will hold up.
Thanks
Kenric

Type 1 CV joint how much HP?
Good quality is getting harder and harder to find.

Re: Type 1 CV joint how much HP?
The Type 1 CV joint is good for up to 150hp (while being thrashed hard) as long as you're not drag racing. We know this because of our LeMons racing experience, with our big 2.2 torque engines. We have 150hp calculated from our car weight, drag, and top speed at Daytona. This is how you get real numbers that incorporate full load and tire friction

For a proven 200hp racer, I'd run Type 2 bus joints.

Without wheel hop, way more power than tires can hold...at stock ride height. The more angle on adds the less likely they are likely to last.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Thanks for the input, I should have explained myself better. This is in a 1200lb street buggy with 295 rear tires and an EFI turbo motor. I will start shopping for some Thing flanges and Porsche 924/944 axles and stub axles.
Thanks Kenric

Agree. Unless you're regularly racing it, I suggest sticking with Type 1 axles and CVs. They're cheaper and easier to replace than R/Ps and spider gears...

Now you have got me thinking, this is a fresh superbeetle Z case trans with a Crown superdiff. I would much rather replace CV joints than rebuild the trans. I plan on some autocross events and maybe a time or 2 at the strip nothing serious.
Thanks

I believe you can do what you want with Type 1 CV's, and I like your thinking of the CV as a safety device. Let them break first.

Z case w/crown Super Diff,, Score,,, I waiting to find a good 10/15 IRS diff for my Z case
I race a cpl times with type 1 cv's ,no issues cuz I granny launched , but for piece-of-mind switched to Type 181
but I've left them scattered at the starting line too(type 1's) haven't broke a 'Thing' yet
