010 Distributor
any problems using a 010 Distributor in a 1.7 with 40IDf Webers, mechanical advance or should I consider an 090.
Also considering a Pertronix Igniter. Are the units for the 090 the same as a 010.
Thanks
Dave

Re: 010 Distributor
I've never seen a 010 used on a Type 4 engine, not sure how well matched they are.
090??? do you mean 009?
The only Pertronix that fits the 010 is the 1844. The 009 uses the 1847 which does not fit the 010.

`49-`53 Beetles and mid-`55-`59 Buses....OLD stuff by now, not much chance of you coming across one in good condition. But Glenn rebuilds them

Re: 010 Distributor
I usually remove the vacuum, weld the moving plate, and adjust the advance springs in the originale dizzy to match the engine in the dyno.

Re: 010 Distributor
The 010 has a nice curve for the Type lV, remove one of the advance springs and all the timing is all in by 2,600. And the 019 is just as good if not a little better, with a little tighter ignition curve, allowing a little more initial timming but keeping the same total.
Much better throttle response, doesn't have the low end flat spot, and helps with gas milage. And not to mention both the 019 & 010 are quality units, that have gone 50 years and still have tight shafts, so no shaft deflection causing timming bounce. And they will go another 50 years.
The Pertronix module that fits the 009 does not fit the 010 oir 019, and the module that fits the 019 & 010 is around $80, $30 to $40 more than the one that fits the 009 which is a volumne seller hence the lower price.
Shop arouind their out their at a reasonable price, and worth the investment.

Re: 010 Distributor
Wondering where you've seen the Pertronix unit for $80.... Best I've found is $125.... There is the knock off Hot Spark unit that is offered on thesamba for $60, not sure of the quality....Type 4 Unleashed wrote:The 010 has a nice curve for the Type lV, remove one of the advance springs and all the timing is all in by 2,600. Actually the 010 was used on 59-60 Type 2s only... the OldVolksHome site is wrong.Marc wrote:`49-`53 Beetles and mid-`55-`59 Buses....OLD stuff by now, not much chance of you coming across one in good condition. But Glenn rebuilds them
The 010 has all the advance in by 2800 with 2 springs... i would never run a distributor with one spring that originally had 2.Type 4 Unleashed wrote:The 010 has a nice curve for the Type lV, remove one of the advance springs and all the timing is all in by 2,600. The 019 has a but more advance at low rpm bu it only has 17 degrees total while the 010 has 22 total.
$92 is the best price i've seen and have bought many from this vendor.sixty9fasty wrote:Wondering where you've seen the Pertronix unit for $80.... Best I've found is $125.... There is the knock off Hot Spark unit that is offered on thesamba for $60, not sure of the quality....

I'd avoid the Hot Spark, i've heard of a high failure rate.

Re: 010 Distributor
Forgot to add that the 1.7 was from my neighbors Porsche.
Searching the pelician parts forum it seems that a 050 or a Mallory is my best option.

I would go with the Mallory since it has adjustable advance and curve.DWP wrote:Forgot to add that the 1.7 was from my neighbors Porsche.

The 050 is a 009 with a different curve and has all the quality issues associated with the 009.

$92 is nice enough... now I know where to get them for the 010 in both the '56 and the Thing...Glenn wrote:$92 is the best price i've seen and have bought many from this vendor.sixty9fasty wrote:Wondering where you've seen the Pertronix unit for $80.... Re: 010 Distributor
Isn't there a reference showing the various advance curves for the distributors over the years somewhere online?
You can almost but a Pertronix billet dist (complete) for what some places ask for the modules...
(OTOH, are they any good?)

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

This is marketing bull sh!t, 27 degrees in the distributor will result in 3-5 degrees initial advance. Good luck getting your engine to start with that little advance. This new distributor has a full 27 degrees of smooth advance which starts at 1000 rpm and comes full in at 3000 rpm. This advance curve is far superior to the original Bosch 009 distributor and will work perfectly on all 1600cc Beetle style performance engines
