Turn signal problems

Post by crvc »

Well maybe not a problem but they don't work. The car is a 1973 beetle that I had turned into a baja bug using a 1967 pan. I assumed the car was missing the turn signal relay. I ordered one and found it is a three-prong plug. Looking at the relay plate there are no spots for three-prong plug-ins.

The only thing on the plate is a square, 5-prong. The number on the side is 411 941 583C. Made in W-Germany. On the other side is 5AR 9203 The prongs are numbered 56, S, 56a and 56b. Is this the turn signal relay? I had thought is was for the emergency flasher.

If you aren't yet laghing at my incompetence, here's another question. When I made it a baja, I hadn't planned on it being street-legal so I had simply cut the wires leading to the fenders. Could those wires, no longer connected to anything be the reason? I traced the cut wires with a volmeter and there's no voltage there. The fuses are good.

Now with the price of gas so high I'd like to be street-legal so I can use it in town.

Thanks,

Kevin

411 941 583C is the Headlight dimmer relay.

The Flasher goes 2 spaces down from there.

BTW, there is only ONE flasher; the same one is used for both Turn Signals and 4-way Hazards. The switch on the dash controls what happens and also
which Fuse feeds the Flasher.
There is a simplified diagram on my web site.

Without the lights connected, nothing will happen.
You can download a color-coded diagram of the whole car here:

I think this one:
1971 1302 USA de Y
will be the most descriptive for your purposes.

If you need them, look on my web site for the rear tail light wiring colors.

I don't know how you did your baja cnversion, but if you replaced the metal fenders with fiberglass fenders remember to run ground wires back from your signal lights to a ground like the pan.

If you have no front signals installed the rears will probably not flash (or will flash too fast) with a stock flasher unit that expects to see the load of two to four lamps. A "heavy duty" flasher that operates independent of the load current would solve this. Translation of terminals from VW to American-style:
Power into flasher (49 or +) = X
Flasher output (49a) = L
Pilot light (KBL, not used on a `73) = P
The third prong on the stock 3-prong flasher is for ground, not the pilot light - starting in `71 they dropped the KBL terminal and connected the pilot lamp also to 49a.
