Plastic(?) inserts in case for studs and oil pump removal

I finally got the studs out that go all the way through the case. Some of them these little plastic looking things came out. Some fell in the case but they all seemed to be dry rotted. I will have to replace them I guess. I really have no idea what they are. I cant find them anywhere because I dont know what they are. Would they come in a engine gasket set?

Another problem, I cant get this oil pump off to save my life. I dont want to start prying things cause I dont want to screw it up. Any help or sarcastic comments would be great.

K, I'll stick to help for now...

The vibration dampeners do come with the gasket set.

Loosen the bolts around the pump, IN the case itself, to make removing
the pump easier....

There are two flanges on each side, that were designed to alow you to
put prybars behind, AFTER you loosen the case bolts that clamp around
the oil pump.

On a Type I, you have to use a removal tool....

Easy peasy!

I will give that a shot. I never knew what those things were but i will sleep better tonight knowing!

Is it safe to use any gasket set or is their a specific brand that I should look for?

I will work on the oil pump a little more tonight. Thanks

I've been using the Viktor Renz sets with good results.

Make sure you buy the right year model for the heads and exh you
will be using, otherwise you end up having to buy extra gaskets......
It's the simple things that piss ya off the most!

I went to buy the square port gaskets, and the guy sold me 8 gaskets,
all the same part number....you need 2 fronts and 2 rears, for square ports
and I guess he dint have any of the ones for the rears....

For future reference the case through bolts don't come out until the case is split. Once the case is split you have direct access to remove the plastic vibration dampers, then the bolts just slide out.

If you don't have the flywheel off yet there is more bolt(s) behind it that hold the case together.

I have all the bolts and flywhell off. Those things were so dry rotted that a few of them came out with the bolts.

pile is correct. i disassembled two motors and forgot a bolt on each one. the weren't the same ones (atleast my memory works), but forgot them nonetheless.

the bolt for the oil pickup threw me off. it's WAY in there. i'm glad i had the bug me videos!!

the oil pump is a little hard to take out, but can be done. once all the bolts are our, and you've made sure...as i've said i've been there, i used the tabs on the sides of the pump with a screw driver to get them out. when you see them it's rather self explanatory.

i was careful on one motor to releive some pressure by splitting the case a little first then the pump came out a whole lot easier.

i almost made the mistake of the through bolt retainers too. watched the video again...no problems after that.

ok. too much typing....gotta lay down...whew!

Yes, there are two types. One type has the tabs centered such that the gasket is symmetrical and the other has the tabs somewhat offsetted diagonally. One fits the 1 and 4 ports whereas the other the 2 and 4 ports.

I frequently have sets of these exhaust gaskets (good ol' high-quality "Made in Germany") listed on Ebay. I list them so they are very inexpensive compared if you had to buy them from a supplier or get a whole kit. I have plenty of the offset ones and some of the symmetrical ones.
