t4 heater box question

im running a t4 2L in my bug and would like to change the exhaust to a twin muffler set up. im currently running shortened kombi heaterboxes. my question is can the boxes be swapped from the left to the right so that the flange on the box faces forward instead of backward. mere is my current set up minus muffler

Barls80, those are interesting heater boxes... did you build them? I was thinking about doing something similar with some shortened 411 headers.

Yes, they can be swapped from left to right and vise versa so your exhaust exits fwd. You just can't bolt a left box to the right and still have the exhaust facing aft.

the exhaust mounting flanges on vanagon heads look similar but
one of the pair has the mounting holes off-set
this would lead me to believe that you couldn't swap them around
i tried this with some stubb pipes

i wouldn't know about the earlier style

but would recommend you finding some 914 exhausts
as they exit rearwar stock, and are quite long, and am sure, if you boxed clever, you could un pic the heater box and seperate the two pipes and bend them?

All type 4 heads to my knowledge have the offset pair of studs on one of the ports (both oval port & square port heads). This offset pair of studs is what makes the 1&2 side heaterbox face aft or if you bolt the same heater box to the 3&4 side, it will ONLY face fwd. I hope that'sw not confusing. . .

To my knowledge....the standard type 4 units do not have offset manifold bolts....unless you guys are speaking of something I totally have no knowledge of (happens every day

). The ports on my 1.7 seem to be right in line with each other....but because of the shape of the exchanger...you can't swap them anyway. Ray

The F pipes sure fit each way on 1.8 heads.

ok they are stock t4 kombi boxs shorterned with an oxy then with home made tin covers. yeah it is converted for a t1 system using sharpbuilts kit

yeah get plenty from them cause ive put two in line blowers under the back seat.
