Beehive valve springs on a TI motor?

Post by EGad987 »

Was browsing through the Crane Cams website today (roommate is a Smallblock Chevy guy) and we've been researching Crane's new "beehive" springs. The engineering behind them is sound, I'm wondering if they will fit/work on 041 or 044 heads. I'm considering putting them on my 044s to build a motor that may see 8k revs at the track on the weekends. I don't recall the specs on the springs atm, but they seemed like they could work (may take some machining, which I don't mind) Maybe one of you gearhead web gurus can figure this out. I'm willing to try something new, I just don't trust myself to engineer anything without the right info (and my current Blood Alcohol content) Just thought I'd throw the idea out there.

I have a set controlling a pair of 52x41 valves...... Doing the math on the spring rate requirement was tough, but now its cake walk if this one passes the test.

Nice links...

I always wondered what those were called.

Only one problem... I don't see a downside... There's ALWAYS a downside, isn't there???

Oh yeah, I have to buy 16 ;-)
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Marty or Jake,

Any idea which beehive springs and retainers that I'd need to substitute for the K800's (1.460" OD) that I have on my SuperFlows w/.100" longer titanium valves? (drag use ~.650" lift)

The Comp Cams beehives are available with OD's of 1.290" and 1.455". Jeg's has a good list of available sizes and part numbers...

I'll bet you wouldn't have much of a problem finding a fellow VW enthusiast who'd split a set with you. That's what I did with the K-Motion springs that I bought for my car.

I see that you're from Van Alstyne. Ever eaten at The Durning House? (http://www.durninghouse.com/) If not, check it out - mmmm, good!

I'm a dealer for Comp Cams and can get the Beehives individually. We are working on a "bolt-in" for stock O.D. and have several test motors with them, including my drag motor that sees 7,000 every pass. We even did a SWF 1522 (64x87) with Ford modular bee hives and it goes to 6,000 with STOCK pushrods....YES, STOCK! My number is 760-947-6647. The production numbers are going up, so the prices are coming down....a typical bee hive is about 12-15.00 each...remeber, you also need special retainers, available in Ti or chromoly...... :D I'll try to post some pics tomorrow....

They are not cheap espacially when you get the retainers and everything else for them.

Looks like I may be able to use the #26918 springs for my application.

I'm thinking that I'll have to use some type of spring cups since my heads are cut for 1.460" OD springs, and the Comp Cams 26918's have a 1.290" OD (Seat Lbs. 130 @ 1.8", Open Lbs. 318 @ 1.2", Avg Rate 313 lbs./in., Coil Bind 1.085", OD 1.290/1.060", ID 0.885/0.656")

Ideally, we should ALL be using spring cups of some sort.

I can't seem to post photos here, so if you e-mail me I can send you some shots of our current testing...

We did not go with their retainers and related hardware. I was able to design some very nice parts modified from motorcycle pieces to do the job...

I won't know if it works till around February when I fire it up!

What modification needs to be done to run these beehives on a t1 motor?
