Matching/grinding rods

Post by Chuckie70campmobile »

I pulled my new rods out of the box today to make sure they were within 5 grams and boom 617, 614, 580, 580. How the hell do you get 37 grams off one rod?? Do all have to match or do I throw the 617, 614 on 1,3 and the 580's onto 2,4?

Damn it!!

I knew it, I just didn't want to admit it......I'm tired of having the wrong parts or bad parts. This is starting to drive me nuts.

Happens all the time, and not just in VW parts. One of my bike racer buddies is building a 2-stroke twin, and got his pistons in the other day, and one of them was 15 grams heavier than the other. Can you imagine the vibration on that thing?

I just did a balance job for a guy that had a crank that was new in the box- best available. It was 11 grams out!

One of his pistons was 12 grams out, and one rod was 4 grams out....

HAVE YOUR ENGINE PARTS BALANCED BY A VW SPECIALIST WITH THE CORRECT EQUIPMENT AND STAMP INDEXED FOR REASSEMBLY!

Can I make that any more clear???

I won't build anything without my full dynamic balance- seen too many illustrations of junk and mismatches not to.

Nothing in area

Post by Chuckie70campmobile »

There isn't anyone in the area that will touch aircooled VW stuff. How much does it usuall run to send it out??? This damn engine is quickly getting out of my price range, should have just bought one from Jake  One Day, OH, One Day

CB has rods for a really good price. What do I do, I have my Scat CW crank on-hand. Do I weight, shave, assemble, and send out for balance??

My service costs 150.00 for the intermediate balance, but I don't do alot of extra jobs because m,y machine stays tied up alot.

If you have to send it all the way to Rimco, or to me if the timing is right. Else I'd let it sit right there and never make the first RPM.

Its too much time and labor to put it together without balancing... open the doors when the engine is done and hold it at 280 RPM, if its out of balance those doors will talk to you.

BTW, The CB rods are normally spot on from end to end and overall.... Just balanced a set last week...

The dynamic components mean as much, or more than the rod balance does.. That cannot be checked without a machine like mine..

Perhaps its a rare occassion, but one of my CB rods was off(end-to-end) by over 20 thou. They did take care of the problem, but it took about a month to get the rods back, and they did NOT pay for me to ship them back to CB.
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks,
Andy

Thousand thanks

What's involved on my end to send it in? Do you send a complete unit in...Crank, brgs, rods, pistons?? Do you send it assembled or dis?? I'll probably give rimco a call due to the time constraints on my end(your's as well). I need to have the engine on the road and broke in by May so I can drive her to Arizona. This will be my first other than stock engine build so I know it's tough to get it exact the first time. I just don't want the learning experience to be in the middle of nowhere with the wif and the little bambino. Thanks again for the help, I'm sure I'll be on again soon. Who should I ask for at Rimco's?

Actually Jake, I'd rather you do it if there is any chance in your schedule. Shipping would be much kinder on me to ship from NY.

RIMCO

Post by Chuckie70campmobile »

Just got off the phone with RIMCO. They have plenty of time and shipping isn't enough to make a diff. I'm getting the stuff ready to ship out and am unsure of somethin...Do I leave the rings on the pistons??

You can. When I had my motor balanced they left them on.
Interesting thing, from what I herd is that the v8 guys have to give the balancer their bearing too. They balance the whole assembly

I also measure bearings... You have to do so to come up with the weight of the entire mass. The assembly is NOT spun up with rods in place. They use "Bobweights" to simulate the weight of the rod on the crank.

Rimco will do you a god job. Their machine is not as new as mine, but its still accurate. They did many for me before I got my machine.

MAKE SURE IT COMES BACK INDEXED FOR ASSEMBLY! If not, you just wasted your money.

What exactly is an indexed assembly? When I got mine back from you I got a printout of the rotating mass across and RPM band, is that what you mean?
