OEM German vs. Aftermarket cooling tin

Post by Bugbit5 »

I've read it a thousand times...

German OEM cooling tin is much better than the aftermarket "Taiwan" junk tin.

My question is why? Are there major design/material differences? I remember reading somewhere that the aftermarket cylinder tin doesn't have a couple of holes in it at various locations. Is ti subtle differences like this that attribute to the large differences in cooling efects? Just curious as to why there would be such a big difference in what "sems" like fairly simple parts in the big picture.

A second question is where do you find good cooling tin and not the cheap stuff?

Thanks.

The Taiwanese 36HP shroud (just one of them) will annihilate the stock shrouds- all of them.... Tested and proven.

LOL!

Someday, Jake, that may be true, but until you make your version, or discover and divulge the source of the one you have tested (which i thought you mentioned may not even be made anymore), the standby is OEM. Why? Because those amazing engineers that built the engine designed the cooling system around it. The rest are quick money makers designed not to cook your engine immediately, but rather with a slow burn so you buy more Taiwanese junk to fix it.. :)

I found out who's it was... I'm selling them the test results!

They are going back into production with them.

I have been media blasting tin for people for awhile now and have found that most aftermarket tin bends under the pressure of the air - the german stuff stays rigid - German is stronger/thicker, don't know if that makes a difference for cooling but in my opinion I would want the stronger german stuff.

I'm going to have to see it before i believe it.

OEM all the way.

Also... the few times i've worked with aftermarket tin (on other people's cars), it never fits and requires cutting and bending to get them to fit.

Trust me... I was in as much shock as anyone else... The aftermarket tin does suck but this shroud when used with stock tin absolutely annihilates the stock shroud(I tested 5 of them)

It works- I have no reason to say it otherwise, I don't even sell them!

Jake,

I do trust you, but it's had to rethink what was the "truth" to me for the past 30 years.

Next thing you'll say is that the Earth is not the center of the universe and the Sun doesn't revolve aroud it.

The dyno don't lie..... especially not when the same test was done with every shroud at the same RPM and load.

I started the testing to prove that my DTM was the hot set up... It was just that- totally wigged out and needing total redesign.

I have NOTHING AT ALL to gain from sharing these test results. I absolutely hate Chrome tin, and still do. But I can honestly admit that the ONE particular shroud that was a 36HP style whipped everything else.

The same tests are now being done in my test car with the same engine- guess what?? the same numbers and margins from 1-2 side to 3-4 side are popping up there as well.

I spent 18 days of my dyno time, 430.00 on fuel, and built an engine specifically for this testing. I put every ounce of enthusiasm that I had in to those 16 hour days- Please don't doubt it. If you do I ask that you purchase a dyno, build a test engine and then do your own testing. You will soon see that it is far from fun, far from easy, and far from being cheap.

I do things that defy conventional wisdom all the time. Just because things that have been MYTH for 30 years are PRVEN WRONG is not reasoning to doubt the test work. Thats why I DO TEST WORK!

How was the "Truth" for the last 30 years tested?? Ever seen a graph from the test and what it was compared to? Ever seen their testing outline? How was the data acquired? How was the engine set up?

Those answers are "I don't know, never seen the graphs" well you'll be seeing mine soon in Ultra VW from start to finish... what does that old saying say??? "Believe nothing of what you hear and half of what you see..." since you can see mine atleast you can believe half of it, and thats more than you can believe of those "Myths" that floated around for 30 years before I ponied up 7,400.00 and decided to test it.... That money came out of MY pocket- not anyone elses.

Try it some time-

Jake,

I just reread my previous post and i never ment to say "I don't trust you". I ment to say "I do trust you". It came out the exact opposite. I am sorry that i did not read it first and catch it before posting.

So i'd like to say this again... I do trust Jake's testing.

I look foward to seeing the results.

And you are 100% correct that i have no proof or have even seen any scientific proof that for the past 30 years OEM tin cools best.

I personally have never used anything other than OEM, so everything i've heard has been second hand.

BTW... Jake, did i tell you i'm sorry for not reading my reply before posting?

No sweat... I just reacted a tad more violently than I should have as well- Its just a reflex from having to deal with doubters on a daily basis. Nothing pisses me off more than some numbskull with a few magazines, some second hand hearsay and a list of doubts about what I did!
