Tweaking HP out of Wasserboxers.
I have a MV 2.1 in my 88 Vanagon.
I recently installed a performance? eprom chip in the ecu, and bumped the timing up to 10 btdc, as indicated with the chip I bought for the digifant f.i.
I definitely feel an increase in power from the start, and in the mid rpm range where the power band seemed to lack a bit.
What are some other ways to tweak a bit more power out of the engine? K&N filter, different wires and plugs, etc..?
Thanks a lot.

You could install some solid rockershafts, swivel adjusters from C.B. Performance...
They make a set of 9mm swivel foot adjusters that will go right in your rocker arms...
They also sell a set of 1.25 ratio rocker arms that are the 9mm's These are factory rockers that have the pushrod cup re-located for more ratio.
Set-up your valvetrain geometry with cut-to length pushrods (if needed) and rocker stand shims.
K&N aircleaner would be good...
Up-graded ignition products would be good...
Good Quality oil in the motor / Tranny would be good...
A good quality exhaust system (header) That's about it without tearing into the motor... Maybe I missed something?
Service the C-V Joints / re-pack all the wheel bearings.
6 ply tires reduce the rolling resistance / help with handling / Improve gas milage / last far longer than regular tires on a Bus.
These tires are the ones reccomended for mid-sized Ford trucks ... Explorer? I'm not shure exactly..

I can only reccomend the mechanical / internal modifications... The factory ignition is a good system.
My specialty is building motors... I have done quite a few built wasser motors / related components. These are usually carburated....
My specialty is the Type 5 conversion... Converting to air cooled for Dunebuggies, sandrails, earlier street cars, race cars.
I'm not shure if the Mallory ignition system is compatible with your fuel injection.
i don't give out advice on subjects that I have no experience with...
Maybe someone else on here can speak from experience, or you could describe what you want on the fuel injection Forum?
Good Luck with your project. - Joe

The 9mm adjusters ONLY fit the CB 1.25 rockers--- Them fitting the std rockers is a bit of disinfomation I started. (my bad) Stock VW/wasser are 10 mm. A cheap way to go would be T1 1.1:1 rockers, they have 8mm adjusters, and would take the Real Porsche adjusters John sells, probably need the same .060 inch removed for clearance, easy to do. Should practically eliminate guide wear//adjustments, even with solid lifters.
I have hear nothing but good things from bolting on Berg (or Scats copy) 1.4 rockers, assuming a stock cam.
With the chip, it should really sing... 30HP is a LOT from a bolt on combo on a 95HP engine, but appears realaistic, as Boston Bobs #s are about the same, even more with a little porting/big valves.
I'll be harassing John in 2 weeks... If it doesn't hurt too bad.
(Discounted combo on rockers + chip?)

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

John, send pics to [email protected]
What do you think a production turbo would go for?
Thanks,
Chris
